No you don't but it makes it much much more likely especially if you are new to it. You are purposely waking up during REM periods and it makes it much more likely to remember dreams. The wake up period will help make your mind more conscious/alert while your body is still wanting sleep. My first times were random too and unintentional.

So ya, you don't NEED to do it to lucid dream but I would very highly recommond WBTB (waking up)/MILD in combination w/other techniques especially since you are unable to control it and will need that increased chance.
This entire reality is SELF REFLECTION. You reflect your essence and project it onto the universe.

You should read these guides, they'll help you alot:

But you need to know when your REM cycle is. Usually after about 5-6 hours (that seems fine) is pretty good since that's when your REM sleep is getting longer... You wanna wake up just before a long dream basically. Then stay up for 30-60 minutes.

You can sleep the whole night through and still become lucid, but for beginners they have a much better chance of lucidity if they wake up during the night.
