      What is this?

Okay so this strange thing happened to me last night. I was having a regular dream and then everything around me just filled with blackness. It felt like I was on the border of waking up or something. I knew I was sleeping and thought to myself that if I opened my eyes I would be awake. But I didn't want to because I wanted sleep longer so I could go lucid. I got bored of the blackness because nothing was happening so I just opened my eyes and bam! I was awake.

This is not the first time this has happened though. A few months ago when I first started reading about lucid dreaming, I was having this dream and then it just all went black again. I realised I was dreaming and I'm like oh my god I'm lucid so I tried jumping or something I think but I can't remember what happened. And then I was thinking to myself if I open my eyes I will be awake and I'm pretty sure I'm awake right now but my eyes are just closed. So I opened my eyes and I was awake. So I don't know if I was just waking up and my eyes were closed or if I was like partially lucid.

I was thinking maybe sleep paralysis? But I could wake up on demand.
      Any thoughts?

It's just a dream without any dream visuals. I have that happen to me a lot when I become lucid and every so often in normal dreams. When that happens to me there are a few things I can try to get a full lucid dream to form.

      1) I'll try to feel and hear my surroundings. Typically I'll try to feel the location I was in when the dream faded, but sometimes I'll try to feel a new location.

      2) I'll try spinning. This will either bring back dream visuals for me or it was give me the sensation of rolling out of my bed.

      3) I'll just try to visualize where I want to be. This works the least for me, but it's nice when it does work.

Like for anybody, you should try to find out what works best for you.

      John11 has some great advice.

Dreams that fade to black are frusteratingly common. Try the things John11 suggested. I also like to just ignor the lack of visuals. I just sort of make up my dream in my mind. Eventually I'll get so involved in the imagining that I forget I can't see and gradually I discover I can see again.

Good luck with this! And BTW, this could turn out to be a great dream sign for you!
