Well first off, Hi! I'm Shift, welcome to Dreamviews

Hah! I used to call this my 'recipe for lucidity'. I have no idea why it worked, but after staying up all night studying, then having periods of extreme stress with the studying and then the exam itself, I'd take naps. I wouldn't normally get lucid during the afternoon naps themselves, but when I got up and spent a few hours awake, then went to sleep for the night, I would almost ALWAYS get lucid that night. My best guess would be sleep deprivation, stress, and then catching up on sleep during the nap and getting NREM sleep out of the way, but really who knows

Congrats, this is called a "Dream Exit Induced Lucid Dream", aka DEILD, a type of WILD.

No one knows why it can be easy to lucid during naps, but yup sometimes it happens! Over the summer I'd take naps after my morning classes and almost always got lucid, though this doesn't happen as much during the real school year Unfortunately!

It sounds like a lot of your lucid dreams so far have been WILDs. Usually for those new to learning to induce lucid dreams I recommend DILDs, unless they can already WILD. You may want to check out these links 1, 2, 3.
It's also really really exciting to hear about another biology student with an interest in sleep/dreaming research!

Have anyone heard of this and what is it usually associated with.
Usually, weird sensations you get like this while falling asleep are hypnagogic hallucinations, little hallucinations that can be any of the senses, in this case it would be a somatosensory or tactile hallucination. They can be auditory, visual, emotional, tactile... I actually don't think I've ever heard of a taste or smell one, though... I don't think they are 100% positive what these are yet, but they occur during the earliest stage of sleep as you are falling asleep. They're very common, but most people won't remember experiencing them often. Lucid dreamers, who cultivate their ability to remain conscious while falling asleep, are often very aware while experiencing them and so remember them.
