Trying to learn lucid dreaming since almost 2 years, need help!

      hi guys,

      I really have a problem.
I´m trying to learn to have lucid dreams since almost 2 years now and had only 2 (very short) lucid dreams.
And I dont even know what I´m doing wrong.
I can remember at least 2 dreams per night, I write down my dreams since 1 1/2 years and I know them well. I know my dream signs (mostly context), I´m doing a lot of reality checks during the day. I fall asleep thinking about lucid dreaming and I wake up thinking about it.

      But I have no success.
When I heard that obsession over it could keep you from having lucid dreams I stopped thinking about it for some weeks, and then started from the beginning.

I have a generalized anxiety disorder and I´m wondering if this has anything to do with it. I´m afraid and obsessed over control, but shouldnt this help me getting even more aware about my current situation (whether dream or not)?

anyway, I´m gonna give everything to finally be able to get lucid in dreams. And I´m sure this board will help me

      Welcome to Dreamviews!

Which methods of lucid dreaming are you using? Some are a lot easier than others.

I would recommend browsing around HERE to learn more!

If normal techniques just aren't working for you, I would recommend EILD. This stands for Externally Induced Lucid Dream. The most common way to EILD is to have lucid dream music playing while you sleep. Try THIS

You can find some other EILD soundtracks HERE

      Good luck!

      thanks Puppycat!

Since my dreamsigns are usually odd contexts, I focused on asking myself where I am, who is with me, what I´m doing, if all this is possible etc...

Reading and the clock doesnt work at all with me.
Thanks for your advice on EILD! I tried this a few times, but I always just fell asleep with no success. Maybe I´m gonna focus on it a bit more again.

I´m still trying to find the perfect LD trigger for me. I already often wondered about my situation when I was in a dream (last time was last friday), but my mind ALWAYS finds an explanation. I know that I need to get even more doubtful about reality, so I´m not satisfied with any explanation while dreaming and finally notice that it IS a dream.

I dont care how long it will take to learn LD, I wont stop trying.

      Yeah, just don't give up!

You may want to try some more extreme reality checks. Like flying or something. If you think you may be in a dream, but your mind is trying to cover it up, try to take flight, or poke your finger through your hand, or try to pull your arm off, or something stupid like that.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder, fondness makes the absence longer.

mmm, I don't really think that can help, excuse me..
I think that the best you can do is to try a technique for life...
      I will PM you....

in the 2 lucid dreams I had the first thing I did was flying. But that happened when I was already lucid.

I have no doubt that I´m gonna find the right way for me someday. it´s just a matter of time. during the next month I want to try MILD again (did it before, but only for some days and gave up because I was so bad in the exercises). But I think that maybe my chances of LD will rise if I improve my skills in remembering to do RCs at a special time.

Try finding a wakeful habit such as studying your hands. Bone structure, wrinkles etc. If the habit persists, it can sometimes take place in the dream. When the indiffence is noticed it can act as a trigger. And can possibly let you know you have shifted. Most of the time our dream characters are in slightly different form if not greatly.

So far I always only made a RC of my surroundings but never of myself. I think I´m gonna add that to my reality checks.
      thank you for your help

      thats rough, buddy.

I really hope you can make progress, for me it was like a lot of nothing until my first proper LD, then it started to pick up in frequency from there. anyway, the anxiety disorder could be something thats weighing you down... maybe try spending some time focusing on more relaxing thoughts, i dunno, like listening to calm music, or taking a walk... or something like that...

I´m also wondering if my anxiety is the problem. I know that anxiety patients are extremely hard to hypnotize. Maybe I just cant "let go" because my brain is always attentive.
I dont know, maybe my subconsciousness is just too strong for me :/

      Thumbs up

Don't boost your subconscious up/let it get the better of you! You WILL be able to break this trend... Back yourself.

I read that you only do a R/C of your surroundings... Id suggest definitely changing to a reality check of yourself, since you are always current and stable in your dreams. Anything such as the watch/nose etc. Personally I write AWAKE? on my hand every morning with a huge vivid lol BLUNT I know but it works a charm and its funny to see it always changing in dreams.

You'll find yours for sticking to it this far! GOOD LUCK!

Thank you lucid hunter. I will definately not give up.
I also tried reading and checking out the clock as a RC and also did that in dreams after a while. But this does not work for me because I have absolutely no problems with reading in dreams. Even if I look away and back to it its always the same. probably because (even if I hope it would change somehow) I dont really expect it and then I read the same again or the watch gives the same time.

Your RC is really good though! If the reading thing would work for me I would do that too.
the first thing in the morning that I do is a RC, but once again only of my surroundings. I thought it´s enough because in my dreams I´m 95% at places I dont know, so I thought this is the perfect dream sign for me. But as mentioned above, my brain always finds a dumb explanation. I need to get even more critical about my state!

Maybe if you do the reading or clock thing and EXPECT it to change when you do it in your waking state?

For example, whenever I come across a "Lucid" type scenario in the day, every hour (my watch chimes) and just whenever I feel like it I cover my left hand (which says AWAKE?) with my right, and while its covered look around/actually BELIEVE that there is going to be something else under it. Take off your hand and viola, its still reads AWAKE? lol but iv been doing this and expecting it to change in the day time consistantly for a few weeks and it really works in dreams (well for me anyway).

I use to have the same problem with not realising in my dreams an I started to get a bit bummed out, so I know where your coming from (except not a whole 2 years worth! )

Also using one of Shifts R/C checks a day has helped, even if they are unrelated to your dreams it still builds up your prospective memory.. So youll remember more to reality check etc.

Are people that common in your dreams? Or just different scenes? Another good one is saying to yourself in your head/even OUT LOUD (personally I feel like a bit of a gimp saying this lol but its working) whilst lying in bed and about to go to sleep/or WBTB is "The NEXT PERSON I see I will REALITY CHECK" ... This preps your sub-concious up pretty good.. cause no doubt the next person you see will be a dream character (unless you dont see any at all lol). Its a really broad reality check to use, but I find it works, may work for you too

But yeah just be more critical in the day I guess? Everyones different, these tips might not work for you but maaaybe. GOODLUCK!

      Thanks again for your advice!

I know I should really believe things will change, but I fear I´m not believing in it strong enough.
I always have people in my dreams so this is a great idea! It´s even better because the people in my dreams often change in a weird way (melting faces etc..) I try to improve my memory in doing RCs at special times (for example when I visit my old home, since I dream often about it). The link you gave me is really good, thanks for this! I´m doing such tasks since a few days again, but often miss them through the day :/

I´m quite positive that if I can improve this, I´m gonna have a better chance to have lucid dreams

It feels good to hear I´m not the only one who had this problem. And it´s even better to hear that you were able to beat it too

Yesterday it was the first time that I was seriously frustrated because of my lucid dream failures.
I woke up after about 4 hours of sleep and already remembered 2 dreams. I was positive about might having a WILD when going back to sleep....didnt work.
2 hours later I woke up again and remembered 3 more dreams.
The same thing happened one more time.
During that night I remembered 7 (!) dreams and woke up 3 times during them, always immediately thinking about lucid dreaming, going back serioulsy BELIEVING I´m gonna have a LD that night.

      but no....
