      Question Newbie questions

My first time reading over this website was last night... and what i read is something that ive wanted to do for years control my dream.. but before i start i would like some questions to be answered

When you first start doing reality checks about how long does it take you to experience your first lucid dream? (DILD)

Do you really need to wake yourself during the night or does it only help?

and last.. Is a dream Journal neccesary if you already have good dream recall?

      Welcome holyhammers!

It all depends on the person for how long it will take them to have a LD after they first began doing routine RCs. Sometimes the habit never carries over into the dreamworld. It's different for each person. I will tell you though that I had my first lucid dream two weeks after I first learned about lucid dreaming. Some have LDs before/after others. I will tell you though not to become too discouraged if nothing happens right away. It was two weeks for me, two days for someone else, and two months for another, so timing is something that your body and mind will have to determine and work out.

As far as waking yourself up goes, things are different for different people. Some people are natural lucid dreamers and don't need any help in having them. Others will need to try several methods to find what works best for them. If you don't want to disturb your sleep and start doing so, you may have results faster because it lets your brain know that you are serious about becoming lucid, whereas saying 'naw, not tonight, I want to sleep'. It all depends on what you are willing to do and what works best for you.

Lastly, a DJ. No it isn't necessary to have a DJ. Many keep one because it helps improve their dream recall and because it gives you something interesting to read in the future. It's also a good way to look for dream signs and to keep your mind on lucid dreaming if you do decide to wake up in the middle of the night. It's up to you if you want to keep a DJ. It is recommened though, atleast until you are having lucid dreams to your satisfaction and quantity.

I hope this helps answer your questions. If you need anything, please let me know! I love to try to help.

1.It depends on many factors.Well like cloud said it varies from person to person.

2.It isn't really necessary but you have greater chance to become lucid and to have a longer lucid ( Because at later points of night REM periods become longer and delay between them shorter.

3.Well, yes.You will become more familiar with your dreams. You can find your dream sings. And it helps in many other aspects

And yeah , welcome to DV and enjoy

      Welcome
Getting RCs into your dreams and getting lucid really just happens at its own pace. There's no formula. People use different RCing techniques, have different characteristics, blah blah blah. Lots of people get lucid the very night they hear of it, others who are unfortunate can take a month+. The thing with reality checking is to just make sure that you're being thorough and consistent.

Doing a WBTB isn't necessary, but it can be helpful. I used to have an alarm go off about 2 hours into sleep, but then I'd just turn it off and go back to sleep. I never really do WBTBs. The times I have stayed up for a while and gone back to sleep never resulted in a lucid dream.

A dream journal isn't necessary, but it is helpful. It benefits your overall dream memory and just ensures that your regular dreams and your lucid dreams stick with you. Dream memory is hazy, who knows why, but it's always a good idea to write down dreams that you think are worth remembering. They can completely disappear from your mind, but if you keep a copy just reading it will bring the whole memory rushing back, even years later you can remember those awesome dreams this way. As far as using a DJ for dreamsigns, this is only ONE way to DILD. Using dreamsigns helps, but if it's a huge hassle to keep a steady dream journal (read: in the middle of the night during every brief awakening and in the morning) and you may not necessarily be able to find good dreamsigns. So if it's going to be a huge pain in the ass, I recommend other DILD methods.

Just doing RC's will not in itself help you to become lucid. RCs are designed to be part of a major technique like MILD or WBTB. When used in combination with these your chances will soar higher than if you just performed RC's. In regards to how long it will take it is very individual and no solid answer can be given. So long as your dream recall is up i promise you will get lucid or experience a taste within a few days.

That's not true, just doing RCs can work.

I would not promise anything to people when it is all about their own mind and its way of working.

To the other matter, you can become lucid with RCs only as Shift said. It depends on your dream consciousness. If you have developed good dream awareness, you can understand that there is something fishy in it and thus peform RC, hopefully becoming lucid ( unless you get carried way by the dream).

A big chunk of my LDs begin with spontaneus RC in a dream.
Jujutsu is the gentle art. It's the art where a small man is going to prove to you, no matter how strong you are, no matter how mad you get, that you're going to have to accept defeat. That's what jujutsu is.

to DV. Listen to shift she knows that she's talking about. As for dream control, it's important that you know how dreams are created and flow before controlling them. Check out this tutorial on Dream Control
