Thread: A returning dream emotion

I have one emotion that happens to return to me about every other night. It makes my stomach tight and the best way I could describe it besides that is a wierd combination of the emotions Abhorrence, Amorous, Compassion, Delight, and Temptation. It also gives me gooey feeling that endulfs my entire body.

I have never felt the emotion out of my dream, are there emotions which can only be felt in dreams? And also is there a name for this emotion that I feel?

yes, definitely- I in fact had something similar not too long ago, here is the account, I had something I can only describe as "pleasant adrenaline/'excitement" - but honestly it was quite different and "smooth", it deserves its own name- flowing throughout my body, especially the chest and arms, and it was as if I could feel iot physically, way above any possible feeling of excitement possible in real life. I think now, that there is not one, two but indeed an almost endless supply of new and extraordinary feelings and emotions accessible (only?) through dreams.

I think emotions are heightened in dreams, especially the already extreme ones. My two extreme emotions in dreams are sadness and anger. A fair amount of my dreams (5% or so) end up being sad, or I'm upset for some reason.

As for anger, well, that's a ride and a half. The last time I got angry in a dream, some kid was picking on my brother. All of a sudden, adrenaline starts going through my veins. But it's like this incredible rush. I can actually feel my whole body pulsing with every heartbeat. I then became lucid (my theory is that extreme adrenaline causes high awareness, so lucidity comes) but I was so mad that I just wanted to beat the kid. Every time I punched him, there was a shockwave of pure energy that went through both of us. Words cannot describe the power I felt.

This is an interesting point you bring up... I'll expand a bit on our REM period (dream period) incase you didn't already know.

The REM period is the only time in our sleep where our bodily functions are not monitored/controlled like in the rest of our sleeping time. Our body temperature varies, our breathing does not stay constant, we flex or twitch our muscles and other things like erections etc. All of this is exactly what happens in real life, when awake our breathing isn't constant, our temperature changes to adapt to our current activity/ surrounding.

So shouldn't our emotions change too? I think this all has to do with dreaming. Our body is responding to a false sorrounding, trying to change our temperature and breathing to adapt to the fake environment which is only in our heads. So our emotions would most likely change with them as well shouldn't they, because they also change when awake, that's my theory anyway.

It might be just a really hightened emotion.... but the emotion just is almost indescibable. I really have no name for it. I tried to best describe it but.

I am just guessing that like Fall Into the Sky said that during the REM period there can actually be possible new emotions to be felt. That be pretty cool to exsperience a new emotion of which no one yet have pinpointed.

Very interesting situation, Drawsher. I'm curious - when you experience this emotion in your dream, have you ever tried to describe it (to yourself or to a DC) while you're still in the dream? I wonder if the way that you perceive the emotion - and consequently describe it - while you're dreaming might differ from the way you would do so in waking life, just as the emotion itself is different from your waking emotions.

I find in many real life situations, actually more like.. events over time, like a life saga, tend to assign their very own emotions to you. Like a life atmosphere. Like how certain smells from your past bring back vivid memories, a feeling all in it's own. Dreams can doo this and give you radical atmosphere changes becuase they are seperate from a life that changes more slowly.

I find emotions some of the most incredible things, kinda due to the fact that I tend to have heightened emotions compared to some people anyway.

But I think if a particular dream event or occurance brings back certain specific emotions, it may not be specific to dreaming itself, but would still be difficult to recreate in waking life

Sounds like a fun thing to try tonight. I will first describe it to myself then ask my DC about it so I can see both sides of our emotions.

Then he gave me a friendly laugh and punched me in a face for no reason... Don't we just love dream characters!

I doubt that is the real description of it. Knowing it is wrong seems right but the other part, not really...

I thought I should add something else about the emotion, sometimes it is really heightened to the fact it will remain when I wake up and slowly go away as the day goes to the next night. Or even sometimes stick for days.

Was looking through some old DJ entries when I was younger I have actually asked this question before to a dream character, except the response was different.

DC: It is a emotion that we send you when you try to disown us so we can cherish your experience with us longer threw a feeling that makes you enjoy us more. Please don't leave me... (It goes on longer)

Interesting but.... it still doesn't seem to apply all the way.
