Incredible Headache After The First Lucid Dreaming Experience

Hi everyone, this is my first post here. I stumbled upon dreamviews.com almost two weeks ago and I'm glad that I did. I've followed the techniques described in the tutorials and tried to induce a lucid dream for 12 days and today was a big success. I had two lucid dreams in one night. Everything is ok to here. But here's the problem. My first lucid dream was after 3 hours of sleep. I was flying then I made a reality check. I looked at my left hand when flying and I noticed my hand looked different than normal and I realized that I'm dreaming. And as I've seen on the posts, I really get excited and couldn't control myself. Everything became so blurred. Then I crashed straight into a mountain then I woke up. After waking up I've had a great headache for three or four times. It was like my brain's going to explode. I really got scared and thought I'm dying After a few minutes i returned to normal. Then i slept again and induced into a second lucid dream. After waking up it happened again but only for once and it was much less painful. Is it something that happens for the first timers?

Wow, never heard of that. I doubt that's normal (never experienced it myself). Maybe it's a side effect of overworking your brain or something? Cause when you're sleeping, that's your brain and body resting and recovering from the daily activities.

But I dunno really. Hope it doesn't happen again though and welcome to DV.

Try upgrading your video card drivers.

. I've never had this myself, but it is probably just from the increased mental excitement. Or it could be from anything. Hopefully it doesn't happen again.

Thanks for the answers and yes I think it could be both mental and physical. I study computer engineering and I'm bodybuilding at the same time which means I get tired both physically and mentally. I guess I'm pushing my limits a little too hard I hope it doesn't happen again.

I'm gonna post the same thing I posted on a similar thread because I'm just discovering that I'm not alone with this... "side-effect"... of lucid dreaming. I hope maybe this can help you find some answers!

I've always been curious about this as I've had the same experiences for years, so I did a google search and found something interesting (not to mention, this thread): There are a surprising number of people who experience headaches during and after lucid dreaming... and just as many folks who have never experienced this. My headaches almost always never occur after lucid dreaming UNLESS I wake up and try to force myself to go back into a lucid dreaming state. It works, but the side effect I have is a headache, sometimes like a piercing pain in my head. This happens about 80% of the time I try to go back into a lucid dreaming state, and always in the morning. I've noticed that it happens 100% of the time if I am fully rested, wake up naturally, and force myself to rest more (like on days when I don't work and sleep more than 8 hours). It also happens regularly if my alarm wakes me during a lucid dream, and I force myself back into it during the 15 minute snooze. The strangest part is, while dreaming, I am aware of the headache that my body is experiencing, although my dream self does not experience it. It's very strange to be out of body, yet still aware of the body.

I think what most interests me about this is that there are uncountable occurrences of headaches during/after lucid dreaming just using google, both in message boards and various question/answer sites, but I've yet to run across an accredited research result. For as often as people never experienced this, there are just as many folks who do, including myself. This is something that I've experienced my entire tenure as a lucid dreamer. After reading about this for the past two days I decided to go about a little research project to try and find some answers. If you've experienced this, please share any info you can, like the conditions in which you notice it happening the most, the times, any patterns, etc.

Very interesting. Sorry to hear you guys are having these headaches. My only thought is that a lucid dream is usually an intense experience. Perhaps there is common ground between the exhilaration that most people feel afterwards versus the headaches you two are experiencing. I hope you find a solution.

I'm lucky. When I have one, I feel on top of the world afterwards.

At first I was thinking you might have had a false awakening and imagined the pain because you flew into a building. But, I know from experience that bodybuilding without proper hydration can easily lead to very painful headaches that can even wake you up in the middle of the night. Are you drinking enough water? Are you using creatine? If so, you need even more water still.
