It just happens. I was having them when I first became aware of dreaming at all. How old are people when they first start knowing they have dreams? Three or four? That's when I started having them.
Now I have them almost always if I take a nap. And if I sleep late in the morning, after about ten hours sleep I'll have them.
Or if I get up in the middle of the night, to watch a tennis match in Spain, for example, then go back to bed, I'll sometimes have them.
It rarely happens though during normal night sleep.
Many years ago I bought a Nova Dreamer from the Lucidity Institute to see if that would increase the amount of lucid dreams I had during normal sleeping hours. It worked. But it was hard to fall asleep with it on.
