      Yet another new person!

      Hey there!
I had become interested in lucid dreaming quite a while ago, but for some reason had never really picked it up. For seemingly no reason at all, I Googled lucid dreaming and, once again, stumbled upon this site. After two days of reading and learning, I decided to join!

      A few things about myself.
I am fifteen years old. I am fairly good with recalling dreams, I can usually remember my dreams every morning, which is nice. It's fairly rare that I wake up in the mornings remembering nothing.
And I've always been quite fascinated by subjects like this, I enjoy researching and trying them out, and when I saw how active these forums are, I was thrilled. I always seem to finds sites that have died out, which makes me sad.

Anyway, last night I decided to give it a go, telling myself "I will perform a reality check and find out I am dreaming." constantly, repeating it in my head until I drifted off. I was still somewhat conscious, but I appeared to be in a state of limbo. Neither awake or dreaming, it was weird. I felt as if floating, but I suddenly jerked awake. Is this normal? Also, are there any tips you might have?
As a bit of side information, the reality checks I perform are pinching my nose and attempting to breathe through it, and looking at my hand. Are there any others I might want to try?
      Thanks in advance!

      Welcome.

A tip I'd give is to write down your dreams in the morning. You already have great recall, so jounaling them will probably get you lucid dreaming that much faster. The main RC I use is the finger though palm RC. I've found much success with that one. As for you jerking awake, that's called a Hypnic Jerk. It happens mostly when you're tired, and it's completely normal.

      Awesome, thanks.
Another question I have. For the longest time, my dreams were always in third person. Any dream I had, I was watching from the outside (especially scary for my nightmares. Watching my brother stab me in the back was NOT a good experience), but recently they've all been in first person.
Normal? Do dreams often switch like that?

Well, I usually dream in 1st person, but I've had a few dreams where I've been in 3rd. So I'd say they don't often swtich. It's probably different for others, though.

I commonly dream from the first and third person perspectives simultaneously. And now that I think about it, that all dissolves into the first person when I become lucid. There's another thread here on DV that has already gone into this conversation if you'd like to check that one out. I have no real idea what the symbolism of perspective in dreams could be, although I'm glad you've raised the question, I intend to fine out. It may have something to do with your control of the dream: regular dreams may tend to be in the 3rd person while LDs may tend to be more in the 1st.

      P.S.

I've read somewhere that observing situations in 3rd person is particularly useful for overcoming fears, embarrassment or recurring nightmares. When you watch yourself do something from a distance it has a certain dissociative effect. It works for dreams and plain imagining alike.

      Thanks for the replies, guys!
Two things: First, my name is latin. It is literally "Ruler dream".

Second, I believe I managed to get lucid last night, not once, but twice. I fell asleep and in the dream, there was no one around. I was simply on this one long road around nightfall. And I just decided "Well, I think I'll do a reality check!" and was breathing through my nose, even while I had closed it. I got overly excited and woke up. I had a very similar dream, but I was in a room. I performed a reality check again, and got excited.

That usually happens your first few times you should get used to it over these next few and you wont get as exicted. Just dont get in a big rush take your time and if you feel things start to fade rub your hands together, you can also spin in circles but i have not found that one to work as well. Good luck and I hope you have fune you are in for entirely new adventure!
