Hardc0re...the essence of a reality check is to check to see if you are dreaming.
The overriding rule I would say is to NEVER be sure you're awake, take every reality check as seriously as the last. You only need to spend 2-3 seconds doing them when you do them, but make sure you actively look around for anything strange or out of the ordinary, or for your own personal dream signs when you do.
That said
1) I have a digital watch, I set it to go off every hour on the hour. When it goes off, I look at the time, I look away for a second, look back and if the time has gotten altered in a strange way, it's a good indication that you're dreaming. (you can buy a cheap digital watch almost anywhere).
2) Every time I enter my dorm-room and room at home, I switch the lights on then off then on again, you might be aware that it's difficult if not impossible to adjust light levels in a dream.
3) Whenever I awaken I do a nose reality check (hold your nose closed and attempt to breathe in) if you can, you know that you're asleep.
-It's best to combine a few of these, but I guarentee if you get that watch or have some way of reminding yourself to do a reality check every hour on the hour (or more) you'll begin doing it in a dream. I know I have.
Do them as often as you can, I prefer being discreet, but if you can write the two letters "R.C" on your hand and you think it will help, then that will probably carry into your dreams and I say why not try it.
Happy lucids, more awareness to you.
