The Vet just called and told me my little dog is dying.

I just hung up with the Vet and my husband is still at work so I don't want to call him but I needed to tell someone..

My little dog has been trouble getting up on the couch lately so I took her to the Vet. I figured she was just old and the Vet said she had arthritis, gave me some medicine and stated that she should also have her teeth cleaned. They took some blood becuase they need to do so before doing any kind of surgery.

The Vet just called and I thought it was to remind me not to feed her in the morning before the cleaning. Instead she told me that my dog's in very advanced kidney failure and that she has at the most maybe three months.

but she seems fine... she's just old..right?

I asked if I will just find her one morning and she said no.. that she will just stop eating or will start acting ill..

      but she seems fine...

I have to get myself together so I can tell my husband..

I have to call my son at school..

      but she seems FINE...

      I'm sorry...

OMG CLAIR!!!!! I am so so so so...sorry.

I can't say I know what you are going through because my dog will hopefully be around for a few more years but I can only imagine!! He is like the heart and soul of my family, such an angel...I don't know what I will do when he goes. He's a shih-tzu...he's 11 and he can barely hear out of one ear and is mostly blind in one eye. Poor wittle guy. Anyway, just know that she will be in a better place and that she will still come and visit you often! I wish you lots of love... *sending love right now*.

Good luck with everything. And give your doggie lots of kisses.

Here's my baby... little ewok...isn't he?

Clairity, just about a month or so ago, I got a call from my parents about our golden retriever of many years having terminal cancer...I decided to go home, and I went to vet with them the day she got put down...

It was scary seeing and hearing my Dad cry...he NEVER bawls, usually...

I hope your little dog will go as peacefully as our Jolie when the time comes, and I hope she doesn't suffer too much...best wishes and my deepest condolences...

I hate it when that happen. I remember when I had to watch as my dog Kinimi was buried. It was a hard day for me. Also another dog of mine was hit by a truck when he ran away. I loved that dog so much. It goes hard to the heart. I really hope he is ok.

Aww, Im really sorry to hear that =(

Take care and I hope your dog does not have to suffer in any case. It must be horrible. I remember vaguely when my favorite cat died. I was still little but I was pretty sad though. I still have a cat but I never liked him that much

Anyway, I hope everything will turn out in the best way possible.

I'm very sorry to hear about your dog Clairity...knowing that your pet's time is soon coming can be a very hard thing to deal with. I just hope that once your dog does start to show advanced signs of her infection that you will have the fortitude too put her down. I know it can be hard to have your pet euphanized, but I think it's better for both parties.

My last pet too pass away was my prairie dog "Benjamin" and I cried like a baby.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I've nursed a number of termanally ill pets before. One in congestive hear failure. he lived for about 9 months on meds. One that was diabetic, insulin shots twice a day for about 2 years. Two that had liver failure.

It's not an easy thing, but think of all the joy and companionship SHE has received from YOU during his life. I'm sure she had a wonderful life and that you will make her remaining days a pleasant as possible!

That sucks =/ I remember when our dog died. Probably the most upsetting time of my life so far (first person I knew closely that died).

I think everyone has a dying pet story. My last dog, Amy, was such a wonderful black lab. She wasn't pure-bred so she was a little bit more built and had the cutest face! When we moved this summer my parents decided not to have any more pets and so we put her down. She was about 8 years old, but as with many labs had problems with her hips that was just continually getting worse. My sister took it the hardest and was upset that she didn't get to say goodbye.

However, in third grade, my first cat, Misty, died in the drier. Didn't affect me as much as it could have. But don't worry. You're a strong person (I'm more emotional now so I cried over the death of my first two fish)

Thanks so much to all who responded. I am over the initial shock of it all and now just have to make sure that Bailey's last days (how ever many there are) are as comfortable as possible.

It's weird knowing that she is dying. She doesn't really act "sick".. she eats, drinks and walks ok but I know that she's sick.. terminally so. I am glad that I know because I would hate NOT knowing.

InTheMoment, as much as I love her, trust that as soon as I feel that she is in pain, I will end her suffering (to do anything else would be for me.. not for her).

I had another dog that we had to put down almost four years ago due to her age and a bad heart. It was hard but my husband, my son and myself were all there with her when she took her last breath. My son is in college now but my husband and I will be with Bailey when it's her time.

We not only have Bailey but also her sister Brianna. I worry about how Brianna will take Bailey being gone as they have never been without each other for almost 12 years. I am seriously thinking of getting another Bichon puppy now so that Brianna won't feel so totally alone when Bailey dies.

Nina and CT seeing pics of your dogs made me cry.. they are so adorable! Please hold them close one time for me..

Kaniaz, when people say it's just a "dog" your post's one line speaks volumes on how much our pets can mean to us (whether you consciously knew you wrote it or not):

Eh I love dogs... Growing up on the farm our family would always have at least five dogs at any time... one good ol black labrodor and four sheep-dogs. The hard bit comes when they just get too old, and you can tell they're in pain alot.

We live too far away from a vet etc to get them put down, so my old man has to shoot them, and I know it'd be a really hard job. I guess it's because he's spent his life with each one, and so if it comes to putting them down I guess he'd rather do it himself.

I don't know why anyone would want a cat, they're useless. Dogs are the best, and they're at their happiest running round a mob of sheep.

It has been a while since your last post in this thread Clairity, I just wanted to see how it is all going with your doggie. It may be hard to talk about but as I read in the rest of the posts we all cared because we have all lost a furry friend at some time or another. Sorry if this thread is bringing back bad memories.

Alaurast78, my doggie is still with us.. thanks for asking. I have medicine I give her for pain and to help her with her digestion. The vet says that when she stops eating, starts throwing up and/or can't walk, then I need to take her in and have her put down.

It's pretty much a waiting game.

It is always hard to lose a pet/part of the family! It is so awesome that she knew you loved her right up to the last moment. You were there with her in her last moments and that is very special. Her memories will live on in your heart. Sorry for your loss I am happy you knew it was coming and had some good last few weeks with her. Also don't let anyone ever tell you that it is not ok to cry for your dog... she was as real to you as any person on earth and I know you loved her! Best wishes as always

Clairity you seem like such a wonderful and loving person, I'm sure your little doggie enjoyed a great life while she was here. I'm sure her 7 short years were the best she could have had!!

Losing a pet is never easy. I had one of my ferrets, Simon, die about 2 months ago. I hadn't had him very long so it didn't hit me as hard but I was worried about the other one, Rogue, because they had been together their whole lives. She seems alright though. Pets are such an important aspect to many people's lives. My condolances Claire.
