Uhm... I don't think poppies are illegal, the US uses opium extensively. Morphine is made from opium, as are a lot of other pharmaceuticals. If it's a huge part of their economy, if it's removed, they fall into poverty.

If it's a huge part of their economy, if it's removed, they fall into poverty. The cultivation of opium poppies in Afghanistan was made illegal in 2002 by the Karzai government.
