      Upward Bound

This summer, for six weeks, I am spending the summer at a college campus (Berea, KY) with a program called Upward Bound/Woodson Institute. It's a wonderful program that not only focuses on college preparation, but it also has played a considerable part in my outlook on life and other things. It isn't at all like school or anything, but it teaches so much more than school has ever taught me about life and happiness. Anyway, this is my second summer. Does anyone else have this program avalible at their High School? I was just wondering.....If you do, and your a part of it, tell of your experience. If you haven't but you've been to things like this, tell about that also. And if you haven't joined it, but it is avalable, you should try it. Just thought I'd ask...

      Berea! Howdy neighbor!

Since nobody else has answered, I will. We don't have the upward bound program here, however, my daughter has just finished her junior year and taken two advanced placement courses. One in English and one in History. Upon sucessful completion of her tests, we are still waiting for the results, she will be issued college credit.

Next year, she will be taking some remote learning classes administered by the local community college. She will get college and high school credit for these. She will also be taking advanced placement calculus.

If she is successful, she should have almost a semester of college credit when she graduates.

These programs are great in that they prepare students for college, which is quite a bit different from high school life. One thing she has learned is that college professors will not nag her about failing to turn in assignments. If it's not turned in, no warning, just a big fat ZERO. She has also learned that you do not wait until Friday to begin reading a 300 page book and writing up the 10 page essay that is due on Monday
you must be the change you wish to see in the world...

I'm thankful for programs such as these...I mean, I never would have thought that taking my ACT was important my junior year. I'm also 3 classes for half a day at the community college where I live along with AP English four. I am nervous, but Upward Bound helps a lot with adjusting to such a new environment. Anyway, your daughter sounds like a very successful individual! I'm also glad to know that you know where this little bitty town is. Lol....I plan to go to college here.
