PHP is kind of a website-programming language.

PHPbb is a company, I think.

Wasn't phpBB developed and maintained by SourceForge? I am a member, but have been working on the video side of things, virtualdub filters and such.

I dunno, but their website says:

as was alluded to, PHP is an object-oriented programming language for creating dynamic web pages.

phpBB was designed using PHP. What exactly do you want to learn? If you want to learn PHP, then there are tutorials all over the internet. If you simply want to start your own phpBB forum, knowledge of PHP is not actually required.

I was interested in designing a forum just for the fun of it. Do you program or mainly create a gui layout and insert features in it.

I guess ill do more research.

To make these forums you simply download the package, upload it to your website, and configure it. No programming required- except a few things.

Exactly, and phpBB is one of those packaged forums. You do need to know how to program if you really want to get into customizing it though.

Edit: I would suggest using Invision Power Board if you were going to make a forum. Thats what mine runs on anyways.
