Conservitive: Michael Howard, I hate him, I loke his policies, I just hate how much of a homophobe he is. Labour: Vote Blair, get Brown. Blair is Buush's lap dog. Brown is trigger happy with the taxes.

i was given 3 choices when filling out my voter card... democrat, republican, independent... i'm a independent, like you said, think for yourself kinda deal. voting along party lines is quite doltish.

Must differ from state to state... I'd guess in states that have D, R, or I, the I is like no affiliation since the "official" American Independent Party kind of doesn't exist anymore (except good old California). I'm from Pennsylvania, and there was actually a place to mark "no affiliation" but then again we are a commonwealth and not a state, so that might be a difference.

I'm dead set against political parties, but I identify myself as a radical libertarian, and so I voted in this poll for the libertarians. I'm really more of an anarchist, but I wouldn't be too upset with a minimalist state.

I don't think you should vote for someone just because they're of a certain party, but usually republicans = conservative and democrats = liberal.

I voted Republican, since I tend to identify with their values more than any other party. There are exception of course. But in reality, I'm Canadian, so it doesn't make the least bit of difference. I'm also pretty much an anarchist--if everyone took appropriate responsibility for what needs to be done, government would be obsolete. At the very least, tho, I'd like to see an end to the two party system and the backdoor dealing they require for advancement. Having many parties or abandoning parties altogether and allowing candidates to run as individuals would go a long way toward cleaning up US gov't.

If I had my way, I'd live in an autocracy. One person ruling it all (with advisers, of course). That way, we wouldn't have to really guess about what he/she was going to do because we'd get to know what kind of person the autocrat is. Then, it'd be pretty clear what kind of life we'd live. However, I'm not going to discuss history and turn this into a post meant for the "Extended Discussion" forum. What can I say? Anarchists are way too trusting of the intellectual and motivational capacity of their fellow human beings. A domestic example: Living without government would necessitate that every single person be responsible for the maintenance of the sewer lines that run under their house. If even one person on your block doesn't maintain the lines themselves or hire a private contractor to do it for them, shit backs up in your house. I've got a lot of neighbors, and would trust maybe only one or two of them to undertake such responsibility. I don't want a house full of shit because some slob down the block decided to watch "Survivor" instead of patching the pipe that his urine has corroded. I believe in the need for government because most people lack the resources, knowledge, understanding, and abilities to run their own lives in a way that does not cause harm to others. Sewer lines, telephone lines, electrical lines, roads, schools, etc-- anything that is shared between people is vulnerable in an anarchist system. Also, the capitalist economic system necessitates a hierarchy of resource distribution. This inequality is somewhat tempered by government programs such as free public education, unemployment insurance, social security, etc. Take that all away and you will have slums in the US as bad as can be found in any third world country. Out of sight is out of mind. If you think that wealthy people are going to set up private charities and donate enough money to assist those living in poverty, think again. Government is never perfect. You may not like certain aspects of it. You may enjoy bitching about it as a favorite pastime. But you need it. We all need it. It is protection from ourselves.

I understand most of your argument, but the idea that if government run businesses and agencies were no longer run by the government it would lead to chaos because each individual would now be responsible for that task is a little far fetched. Does each person have to grow their own food?? Of coarse not. It isn't like, if it happened, the government would just toss its hands up in the air and say "you're all on your own." They would be sold off to private investors. Those private investors would do a much better job than the government ever did; they'd have to efficient if they wanted to stay in business. Government run businesses have no incentive to be efficient... and why should they be when they've got a hand in the pocket of uncle sam?
