      Being mean

I have been teasing my brother about his thinning hair, but I think he is starting to feel bad about it and I feel baaaadddd about giving him a hard time about it. Is this really something that men get offended about? Now, I have to make it up to him. Any ideas? other than buying him a bottle of Jack Daniels?

      Yes.

Thinning hair is an irreversible medical thing. Basically, it's like making fun of him losing an arm or something. He can't do anything about it, nothing on the market will come close to replicating natural hair, and you are mocking something he cannot control.

If you tell a man he's a no good, tale-tattling, sneaking snip-snap thin haired ape, they'll take it to a varying offense, depending on their personality and mood. If he has good self-confidence, a sense of humor, and is in a good mood, he'll take it well. If he doesn't or isn't, he won't.

It never hurts to refrain from teasing, though.

If it's not something he's comfortable with yet, then he's going to be offended. It's like making fun of someone for being overweight when you know they're self-conscious about it.

My hair has started thinning, likely as a side effect of my medication in addition to an enormous amount of stress, and I'm not sure if it can be reversed or even slowed down. I've always had straight, thick, jet black hair so it's discouraging to see it going thin, limp, and kinky. In addition to looking good, it had practical uses - I used it as a sort of safety blanket by brushing it or running my hands through it when I was feeling stressed or overwhelmed... but now I can't do that anymore without having a few hairs fall out each time. Worst of all, I have a dent in my head from when I fell as a kid so I can't really pull off the shaved head look.

It's a personal thing for everyone, and it can be a bigger deal for "Person X" than it is for "Person Y" for a number of reasons. It may seem trivial for one person, but it may be a (temporary) crisis for someone else. If you really want to make it up to him, give him an honest apology, let him know you didn't know it was a big deal, and offer him some advice about hair care if you can (like recommending he see a doctor about dietary changes and supplements).

      Hope this helps.

Some people care, some don't. To make fun, tease, or joke about someone's body parts can harm ones self esteem. Refraining from it helps you and others feel body positive. An apology would certainly be nice. If your brother worries about his thin hair then maybe you can encourage him to talk to his doctor about his options, such as a prescription, an OTC treatment, or a sensitive hair cleansing regimen. If you wanted to buy him something to prevent his thinning, hair loss then try sites like Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database which list medicines for conditions like alopecia.

I agree with you there. He used to bug me about being "a little" overweight, but I was able to shed the weight and he can't tease me about it anymore. Maybe that is why he is getting so touchy about losing hair.

Thank you for this. I did apologize and even baked him his favorite pie. I don't want him to do anything about his hair - his wife does not complain about it, I just tease him about it, but he is still a good looking man even if his forehead is so shiny.

Anyway, I think he is considering ***LINK REMOVED*** ? Have you heard of this? Are they any good? This is the only comment I found about them that is not straight from their site.

Holy shit! Youre still here! How've you been? It's literally been years!! Anyway yeah I agree with this, teasing is perfectly innocent, but if someone's hurt by it it really isn't hard to apologize and change the behaviour. (staying on topic lel)
