I'm not sure what "Fort et Fidele" means (my father probably does). Also, note the naked woman whcih can be seen covering her "private parts"
      atop the crest. Hmm.

I went with old French where "Fort" would be "Very" or "Extremely".

Admittedly, it's one of my weaker languages. Any fluent french speakers to take a stab at it?

You may well be right, I've probably forgotten 99.9% of the latin I knew, but I would have thought that would have been "forte" properly conjugated.

      fors fortis
      forte
      fortuito
      fortuitus
      fortuna

      [shrug]

I'm fairly willing to concede it though! 'Cause I don't know for certain.

The family crest probably dates back around 1066 in Yorkshire which would put it into the same time period we're seeing for the branch to old French

The saying is something like "anchors away" or "anchors on high"

      "anchor fast anchor" (I forget)

That's an oldie. Very old Scottish. The Legrey coat of arms, practically legend. So your last name is: Graye, Gray, Grey, Legrey, Croy, .... Probably the english spelling of Gray.

      Translated it's: Anchor, Fast Anchor

To hold fast and not budge. One could speculate it was given to the family after a battle for their support of one of the Hands of the time. Maybe in the Battle of Hastings (1066AD), but I'm speculating.

I did a paper on the Scotts during that time period many a year ago. So I knew many of the crests from research, including that one.

Once I knew it was Legrey, the rest is just parlor tricks. I had probably a 90% chance that it would be the english spelling "Gray" with probably a 9% chance of "Grey" and the remaining 1% for the other spellings carrying through. Just parlor tricks where you can impress most of the people most of the time as long as you stay true to the statistics.
