      Angry Why can't I roll my R's?

      Good evening all.

I've been at this for weeks, completely no luck online. So I wanted to make a post on here, and ask for help.

I know that genetically, I can make the sound. Thing is, all tutorials on YouTube I've watched, as well as websites I've read, are all really vague. They basically boil down to:

      1. Relax your tongue, jaw & mouth.

      2. Point your tongue upwards.

      3. Breathe out

      4. Let your tongue vibrate

That's my problem, I want to know how to physically make my tongue vibrate. I'm a beatboxer, so imagine you ask me how to do throat bass. I just say, you do throat bass. That's what this is like for me. Doesn't mean anything. Anyone have any tips on learning this sound? I breathe out and my tongue doesn't flutter. My uvular does, but how do you make your tongue vibrate? Can it be learned or can people just do it right away?

      Thanks in advance.

You do not make your tongue vibrate. The air you are exhaling does. Think of your tongue like a flag flapping in the wind. It takes some practice getting the pressure right between the stiffness of your tongue and the strength of your exhale. It helps to begin exhaling before you start pointing your tongue upwards too. Once you get the the technique of fluttering your tongue down THEN try to add noise to it with your voice. Start just with exhaling.

I think I'm so used to the french R that whenever I exhale my uvula flutters but not my tongue. I just sound like I'm failing to clear my throat. Can you give any more detail on the position of the tongue? Everyone I know who can do it does it so easily. I know one guy who said he never done it before and he done it straight away on his first attempt. It's so frustrating xD

Do not attempt to flutter anything, start exhaling (the pressure of the exhale should be the same as if you were sighing in boredom) and lift the tip of your tongue to just behind your teeth. Do not flex your tongue into a point, but allow it to be as wide as it naturally is.
