      College application essays lost.

All of my life, as far back as I can remember, I have wanted to go to one particular college. I have never considered anywhere else. Something happened recently that really pissed me off about this school though. At the beggining of this high school year, I applied early at this college. I was thrilled with myself when I had everything in early, but a couple of days ago I was notified that for some reason, the my essays that I had to send with my college application got misplaced in the midst of processing. I was told that this would not be held against me, but instead, I have to do a phone interview with an admissions counselor. I am just really pissed off. I had three essays that I worked on for three hours apiece. They were perfect, and now I am stuck with communicating verbally. That's OK, but damn...How could colleges be so irresponsible??Oh well, I am lucky that I get to make it up in any way...I am just dissapointed.

      Re: College application essays lost.

Gwendolyn, did you happen to make copies of your essays or have then stored on your computer so you can refer to them during your phone interview?

I'm just happy that they admitted they lost your essays instead of just denying your application. Sadly, I'm finding that what is vitally important to you means next to nothing to someone else.

I'm confident that you will do fine on your phone interview since you've always wanted to go to this college and therefore know alot about it and can express how strongly you desire to be there. Just remember to take a deep cleansing breath before answering questions that catch you off guard so that you can collect your thoughts. If you aren't sure what they're asking you.. request that they clarify the question.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Wow, that's surprising. All my applications were electronic, maybe you would email them your essays..?

Anyways, I hope all goes well with the interview

Yeah best of luck with it!

Is it a phone-interview? That is kind of weird. I suck at talking at the phone, I wouldn't like it ^_^ And don't they have internet at that college? I bet they have. Try to email them anyway, if you have backups.

Ah I am sure you will get in. Otherwise sue them or something! Your essays must have been good, becouse otherwise you probably would have told us, and you Really want to go the that college.

      possibly related, possibly not.....

but when employers receive CV's for a job position, they are put in a very difficult position. Due to the sheer number of applicants, reading through all the CV's is impractical, let alone interviewing them all
sometimes you'll have 400 applicants just for 1 position.
it's common practise just to chuck half the cv's in the bin, purely to whittle the applicants down to a sensible number.

now I know this is a college application, so it might not be relevant at all.

I heard that at my school, when they needed a teacher they just trew away any application letters that looked silly or had spelling errors. It really goes like that if you want a job.

But on a college, I bet they didn't do it on purpose

      absolutely
I work in a small firm (there's only 3 of us) and we wanted to employ an administrator - cause none of us are organised enough to file things properly
we ended up getting about 100 enquiries

Seriously, if you want to have your CV noticed, and actually read....
keep to one side of A4 (or whatever the normal paper size your country uses) and print it on ever-so-slightly off white creamy paper. Trust me, someone will see it in the pile, and hoick it out cause it's a slightly different colour

Well, I went through with the phone interview and I think I did well. At least now they know what kind of person I am, and I actually am more confident about getting in. Anyway, she asked me totally different questions than were on my application, but it wasn't too bad. I am still a little dissapointed about the essays being lost...But things happen. I think that error was probably due to the fact the school gives a full tuition scholorship to any student they admit. They give all of their students jobs to help pay for the tuition. Students run everything. It's a great opportunity, since I would only be required to work about 10 hours a week. Students can sometimes be a bit incompetent though.....

I think that sounds great! What is the name of this school if I may ask?

The college is Berea College, in Kentucky. Anyway, it is a private school that has been dubbed the number one undergraduate school in the south. They let people all over the country in and they accept more people from other countries than any other school in the country. It is a great school.

Hmm was thinking of starting a new thread for this, but this one seemed appropriate...

Well guess what? The uni I applied to has lost ALL record of me, and as a consequence I am not going to be able to get in... bugger eh? Twelve years of schooling for bugger all...

I applied to my course and got in and everything, but chose to deferr it for a year and resume it the year after (this year). They sent me the application for with which to lodge my deferrment, but I buggered it up and had to get a new form, which I completed and sent to them. The uni course offers for this year came out and I learnt that I hadn't been accepted... woo ok, I might ring the helpline sez I... I rang em, explained my situation and they asked me for my name and date of birth etc.
"We're sorry, Mr. Love, but we have no record of any course offers for you on our database," came the reply. Well then... isn't that great? My dad worked his arse off to send me to the city and a private boarding school for four years and now I'm left with nothing at all... kind of funny, because this shit always seems to happen to me - I couldn't organise myself out of a paper bag.

So, sorry to hijack the thread Gwendolyn, but I understand everything you've been through and I'd rather get my whinge over and done with here than start a new thread for it. It's kinda of strange now, because I have absolutley no plans at all for the rest of my life, and I'm sitting here waiting for my old man to come home so I can explain the delicate situation of me wasting his time and money... ergh.

Still, I suppose I should look on the light side of it all. I think I have a headache.

Ahh hehe maybe silly little me was over-reacting a bit there I guess it was the shock of it all. The guy said "we have no record of you recieving an application" and I took it to mean no record of me ever recieving one, when he probably just meant for this year... I'll have to ring em again tomorrow and sort something out.

If nothing works out, that's when I can hit the big red panic button. Makes you wonder why you bother getting out of bed sometimes lol.

Heh, you guys don't have to deal with UCAS! Count yourself lucky! Over here, UCAS is the only way you're allowed to apply, the system is useless and you pay £15 for the privelege of doing what you could do yourself. Anyways, good luck and I hope it works out in the end!
