Bad idea choosing a spanish referee for an Italy game, especially since Spain is still running and probably doesn't want to play them. Just awful.

Hooray Brazil! Ghana's goal keeper shouldn't have come out of his box.

I don't see why Brazil isn't playing their best players...that really wasn't a great game for brazil. Robinho, Cissinho, and Juninho should all be in. I know Robinho is injured right now, but for all other matches he should play. I really hope hes in next one.

Ghana played better than I expected but they really don't know how to shoot in the box. All their shots were straight at at the goalkeeper.

I figured they would've figured out that a spanish referee for an Italian game would be a bad idea, but then they went and got a fucking Italian for the Spanish game. WHY?

The hell is wrong with people these days?

France... beat Spain? 3-1?? Bearing in mind, Spain has been undefeated for 26(?) consecutive games, or since 2004. France, yes, being a European soccer team, still is the underdog and isn't quite known for its soccer.

That was a screwy game. Brazil against France will at least give some comic relief. No way in hell are they beating Brazil.

France all the way! Down 1-0, come with two goals in a row and then Zidane gets his glory goal in injury time. Wasn't a screwy game, France played well, Spain couldn't get in the box enough and get shots on target. And France is kinda known for its soccer, there's lots of french players on the Fifa 100 list, and Zidane (!) + Henry, and lots of other talent. Although they aren't as great when they're all together (which is maybe what you meant), France has and had a lot of talented players. True though, Brazil is going to be (very) hard, (Hell, is there ANY team that wouldn't have a hard time against Brazil?) but France played well today and all Spain could get in was a penalty.
      France:
      Game 1: 0 goals
      Game 2: 1 goal
      Game 3: 2 goals
      Game 4: 3 goals
      Game 5: 4 GOALS?? (... not quite...)

It was a good game, I was just 'mildly' taken aback.

However, there will be no game until friday, but what a game it will be! I guess I'll have to watch tennis or something whilst I wait.

Argentina would've won if it weren't for the goalie.
Italy will win this. They will win this.

You must be referring to the referee who not only didn'd call the penalty on Rodriguez, but gave him a YELLOW on the play!? (???).

I had my doubts about Argentina winning in regular time, but this was absolutely outrageous -- they were clearly the better team (note: first have ball posession - ARG 67% to GER 33%). Fucked up.

No matter, I guess I'm forced to root for Brazil -- and also hope England gets their ass kicked (no WAY they deserve to be in this with the way they've played).

Italy shouldn't be too proud either - fucking Australia game was given to them.

PS -- never really expected USA to go far. Just nice to see they made an appearance.

Dammit, I thought England had a chance. Portugal was acting an ass through some of that game. England even was playing for 10 players for the second half and held their own mostly. Well crap. At least the Brazil/France game will cheer me up.
Edit: Oh yeah, fuck Rooney for screwing it up.

So was the game against the US if you ask me...

You said it. That was an intense game. I'm not a soccer fan, but that had me glued to the screen yelling at the TV. I'm still short for breath. I now understand why the amount of heart attacks in England went up 25% when England lost the 1998 world cup game to Argentina. LOL. Why couldn't England win on the PKs!? #@%& At least Rooney got the red card for a good reason, unlike a lot of other yellow and red cards I've seen.

      I love penalty shoot-outs!

I reckon the BBC jinxed it as they obviously pre-prepared the 'out of the world cup credits'....

      What an unfortunate name.

I feel sorry for that guy.

But Hooray Brazil! Hopefully this doesn't even need to go into Overtime.

Double Edit: Well shit. Now I need to go pour molten cheese on my foot.
France.... Won? No way. Dammit. :random cursing ensues:

Goddammit, if Portugal doesn't beat France, that is the sure sign that the world is ending.

I think I'm gonna cry of joy. Hell yeah we beat Brazil and Spain, both on big streaks. It wasn't a 1998, but still a good game that I think, all bias aside, France controlled. Brazil looked kinda asleep the whole time, and Zidane played the best he has yet in the tournament, probably thinking it was his last game. Lost one ball in the full 93 mins. We got some pretty bad calls, but they choked on the best opportunities. Brazil just never seemed to get into the rhythm, especially in the first half. Only in the last ten minutes did they really start to put us in danger, and that's where their only (I think) shot on goal came.
France actually has a good shot now, I don't think Portugal will be as much as a challenge, but you never know with Figo's legendary acting skills . Either way, it's still a great series of upsets produced by France after such a mediocre start and the disaster that was 2002...

      But for now...

Brazil played terribly. The score could have been worse. Many of the players didn't even look like they cared. I've never seen them play so lazily. It was hard to watch. France deserved that win. Zidane played very well.

It was unfortunate that Brazils best players sat on the bench most of the tournament. Anyone else notice that once some changes were made brazil looked more alive?

Well, I just don't know where to start. The dissapointment just never ends.

First, I know you're all gonna think that I'm a typical American that just has to hate the French because... well, that's just the way things are. But really, I've just never cared for them ever. You have no idea how difficult it was watching the game at a bar next to this French idiot who was jumping and yelling in that repugnant language that's so hard to the ears. It wasn't even so much because he was French - he was just annoying as HELL!! He fit the stereotype to the T, I must say. Even the two other dudes he was with were a bit uncomfortable about it.

But, that's besides the point. I'm all for the underdog and honestly, I think France did play better and deserved to win... THAT game. It was nice to see that they never let up the aggression after their goal (unlike this other team -*cough* Argentina *cough*).

Of all the teams this cup, Brazil was the last one I was going to root for. To start, they're Agentina's rivals. Second, they were too favored to win. They didn't really need MY support. BUT- seeing as they were the only team from the americas to be in this - I was really hoping they would win. At LEAST get to the World Cup.

I have nothing to watch now. It's a European cup. I couldn't care less.
I suppose I could root for Italy (because of my heritage). Guess it's either that or freakin tennis....

At least I found some joy in England going down on penalties. Still, PKs are NO way to decide a soccer match. It should just go to sudden death.

Definitely, Adriano sort of woke up the team and helped them start attacking again. Robinho also played well and put France under pressure for the end of the game.
You're right though, the rest of the team was really lazy it seemed, don't know if it was because of France or what. Ronaldo missed some good opportunities, and Ronaldinho hit two free kicks from up close over the bar...

Other than the maybe root for Italy due to my heritage, as I am not Italian, I totally agree with you. I don't know who to root for as I don't want the french to win (nothing to do with "the way things are"), I can't say I am in love with the Italian team, and I really don't care either way about Germany and Portugal, though I didn't want either of them to win anyways.

Too bad England or Spain didn't make it, then at least I'd have some one to root for. But seriously, England didn't deserve it at all. (I don't know about Spain as I didn't see any of their games.) Even with my only half-watching of the World Cup, and not being able to see most of the games (and not caring enough to do my research on the Internet), I could tell that England was not playing their best game, though I think they made up for it somewhat in their game against Portugal, where they held out for like an hour of play with a missing person (why, Rooney, why... ). Losing on Penalty kicks is terrible. I agree they are a bad way to end a game. They aren't about who has the best team, they are just about who still has it in them to score from basically point blank range after running for two hours, and how skillful and smart a goaly (sp?) is. I mean, even with their win, Portugal totally missed a couple goals. It's an unfair way to go down.

Ive definately lost most interest in this cup. Maybe I can root for portugal since the coach is the same brazillian coach that won the world cup for brazil last time....but then again he's a traitor....leaving us with this dumbe coach. How many coaches would have loved to have those players at their disposal.... and he blew it. You'd almost have to try to not win.
