So I was on myspace earlier and I came across a bulletin linking me to this site:

http://www.saveyourspace.org/

Comments anyone? This is as far as I could understand after actually reading the bill (correct me if I'm wrong):

Social networking sites such as Myspace, online forum (dreamviews?), any site with a chatroom (dreamviews again), will no longer be viewable by any persons, either under 18 or over it when surfing the Internet at a school or a library.
Apparently some old man that's never seen a social networking site decided this was the best thing to do to protect the freedom and rights of the American way.

Don't you just love our government?

Its just peachy

seriously, when they were talking about video games they picked the absolute most violent things in video games that they could find... like an airplane in grand theft auto crashing into a building and then exploding

its a freeroaming game! you can do anything you want! they dont TELL you to crash into a building and then explode!

I think that the comittee or whoever decides these decisions needs ONE PERSON OF EVERY AGE instead of a bunch of old farts with nothing to do but abolish things that they don't care/know anything about.

that would make it nice and unbiased

because the way it is now it reminds me of the modern gangster philosophy "if it doesnt help me, regardless of how many other people enjoy it's presence, I will kill it"

Look at the bright side. Eventually, people from OUR generation will be heading the government, and media won't be such a scapegoat.

yeah, in 50 years when a new technology comes out, lets just call it "squirrel" and it does a whole bunch of stuff that we would consider to be highly immoral today, we would want it abolished

It's just another example of the worst harm coming from the best intentions. Nobody wants more internet predators, but utilizing wide-spread censorship won't solve the problem in ANY way. First off, those who cannot access the internet at a library or at school will just access it at home. An internet predator won't be picky--they'll prey on somebody working from a home computer just as readily as picking on somebody on a public computer. So it isn't limiting their access to victims at all, just forcing the victims to access the same information at a different venue.

Why not instead ammend education requirements to include a section on internet predators and how to protect yourself?
Or step up the amount of law enforcement that tracks the predators?

Victimizing the victims never eliminates the predators. Why don't they understand that?

I think it's time to secede. When did government become everyones parents? Or everyones "big brother", rather.

To those in power in America, "Freedom" is understood in only two contexts, or perhaps three: the Freedom to exploit workers, the Freedom to exploit the environment, and the Freedom of Zionists to conquer the World with America's Blessing (The American President came on the News today saying that the people of Lebanon opposed the Israeli Invasion of the Gaza Strip and Lebanon itself because they were opposed to "Freedom". The American President must have been referring to Israeli Freedom to do anything it wants, for America seems to take no account at all of the Freedoms of any other people).

exactly

I've thought about this long... about three months ago I decided I'm moving to canada when I turn 18

nothing bad ever goes on there, its canada. canada doesn't ever provoke countries into war, and if other countries provoke them, they just go "eh?"

everyone just sits around being canadian.

This is interesting news. So you mean under the shroud of 'leglisation', 'protection' and 'etc', they can basically impose country-wide censorship in schools and libraries? Which are two very important places, it has to be said.

I don't usually consider "filtering out" of sites (at schools etc) to be censorship, but when you say it's going to be deployed across the country? Well, that's kind of scary.

Ironic, too, that a library should have anything filtered. Supposed to be a place for information, warts and all.

In a way I can understand the 'social predator' motivation, but if you move (force) kids somewhere else, well, the pedophiles are going to follow for some of that sweet sweet booty, right?

Yeah, it is a bit ironic that they're censoring to "protect" you at a library, where, after five minutes of browsing through the books, you could find instructions on how to produce lethal cyanide gas or build a pipe-bomb...

I've noticed that. We have a "health" class that's basically the lectures we've all heard for years: "Wear your helmet!" "Don't do drugs!" "Don't stick a fork in the toaster, retards!" etc., etc. However, there's a large poster in this room that can tell you where to find drugs, how to prepare them and how to use them. I mean, pretty much any drug under the sun. It's pathetic.

I signed the petition with the comment that "this is just another example of 'bomb the hell out of the civilians just to make sure there are no terrorists hiding among them."

Pedophiles, terrorists, trigger-happy militants, epidemics.....excuses...

Everything that used to represent our (illusory) "freedom," in the western world, is on the verge of getting stripped from us, quarrantined and sealed up behind government walls for the sake of "National Security." There's no easier way to control the freedom and mobility of a population than to convince them it's for the greater good.

I think there needs to be an ammendment to the constitution that guarentees complete freedom of the internet. The only country with enough power/greed to censor the internet is communist china. Are we really on the same level as the commies? Weren't we calling them the 'evil empire' or something like that just a decade or so ago? and now we're using their tricks? fk that.

I just joined this organization yesterday, the free state project: https://secure.freestateproject.org/index.jsp

I think they've got some good ideas. It falls short of cessation, so the government won't freak out and start a civil war. It's been done before in kansas, but now that murder is illegal and there isn't a rival group vying for control of the state it should work just fine. Imagine all the sane people in the united states going to new hampshire and living the life we want to live without the feds trying to screw it up. It gives me happy tingles just thinking about it!

if you read the site, you wouldn't ask such silly questions.

ok. This organization reasons that rather than try to cecede from the united states (which would never work) they would be better off gathering in one state and using their political power to make the state run more or less like an independent nation would.

If I read every link people put on here I would have no time to actually post because I'd still be on some crazy conspiracy theory website. And since your link looked like the epitome of boredom - more to the point I had absolutely no idea where to start, it looked like the admission page for a university or something - I did not read it. Sorry.

Wow, that's pretty drastic. I'm kind of skeptic as to such a plan actually executing successfully. Sounds okay in theory though.

Granted, I may have some beliefs that stray from the norm. However, I still had a problem with "-1*-1=+1 is EVIL MATH". The government is absolutely worthless, and soon we'll realize this, and soon enough it will be overthrown.

While they don't deserve to censor anything, if they do, I hope they censor that timecube website. Then, he can flip out and lash back at the government, and do some damage.

meh don't worry about not reading it, frankly I don't read a lot of the stuff people post here. And yes it is indeed drastic, and no I don't expect it to work, but I have to do something to separate myself from nation as a whole or I'll go batshit crazy within a few years. Even if it doesn't work, at least I tried.
