Thread: Why The Rudeness?

you know, i haven't really noticed this...

but it doesn't HAVE to be rude at all...

this is maybe the largest problem with forums, sms, msn, chatting, etc.:
you can't put emotion in your post... this probably causes the most misunderstandings of the post... so YOU can find things rude, when they aren't meant that way at all...

or maybe some people are just assholes

It probably depends on the situation.

And like Cryo said, emotional & tonal intent are very often misinterpreted online... I've often been thought to be insulting someone when I'm trying to make a clear statement without any emotion tied to it whatsoever, and I'm probably not really trying to insult the person... they just take it that way.

Other times I really am trying to insult someone, but in those cases, I try to be VERY obvious. You've seen me do this, actually... but I can only think of one time I did this on DreamViews and the person was really asking for it... ^_^

It is sometimes easy to take things the wrong way. I for instance have gotten pissed at statements directed at me which weren't insulting or rude at all. When I have looked back at some of them I had a laugh and thought I behaved like a little baby.

Yeah I think it's hard to interpert emotions by looking at words on a screen, so I think certain things are taken the wrong way on the other hand some people are just mean like that and don't give a damn.

It can also be easy taking it wrong when in a bad mood at the time when reading & replying. Many times I find myself thinking "That guy has to be such an asshole", just because I'm in a bad mood myself.
