I wonder if this will ever come into service. It would still hurt like hell, but you'd still live (hopefully).

Just today I happened to watch this thing on tv talking about new body armor and the guy was testing it. He was all "This armor stops everything and is great" and he kept shooting it over and over and it stopped everything. That show really bugged me because the guy never tested the blunt trauma caused by the impact. Its not enough to just stop the bullet from piercing the armor, you need to slow it down or it might kill you anyway.

Think of it this way: its easier to treat blunt force trama =P

And thats great! Untill the enemy gets it too..... or, worse.. even sooner.

Well hopefully if technology keeps advancing we but we keep having wars (seems a bit contradictory) that we will not have as many infantry in the battle field.

Also body armor, while great is not understood by many people. It stops many calibers but They can't make a body armor that is plausible to stop high powered rifles. Those such as 30 caliber and up. Just to much speed.

It would be an expensive role playing game too. It could be one hell of a condom! my mind must be in the gutter this morning.
      my apologies.

That reminds me of this guy and his "soldier" suit of armour. He made it from his grizzly protection suit if I understood correctly.

Actually this isn't that new. Standard Kevlar body armor, Level IIA stuff is able to be penetrated by even pistol rounds now (FN's 5.7 x 28 mm for example) I didn't see the actual show so I don't know how this stuff works effectively against rounds specifically designed to pierce.

Haha. Well we're just keep advancing our weapons. After all, we must not fall behind because we need to be prepared when the aliens attack. And then we shall need suits like this one:

Yeah I saw that on CNN the other day. Pretty neat looking, but it looks too cumbersome to wear. I mean, yeah, it may stop bullets but it looks like it would be too difficult to maneuver and move effiecently in that suit. It reminds me of Unreal Tournement or something.

That sounds pretty cool, I wonder what sort of stuff there will be in 50 years time...

hehehe... half of the use of the suit is scare tactics and morale booster. They should have a few elite squads with it just for those purposes.

I could not watch the video, but I just had to add this:

I have been reading research on spider's silk and the potential results are impressive. Imagine silk body armour that can stop a bullet! Silk! It is based on the proteins of the spider silk that act as the foundations for spiders webs. Consider the fact that these tiny little fibers can hold and support much larger spiders. Exaggerated, you can only imagine the implications such a strong and light substance could render.

I do not think this research is new, by any means, but I think there has been a lack of funding and research. Did the video have anything to do with this..?

Just looking at that "grizzly armor," I wouldn't be worried about the armor going wrong, but when you're talking about impacts like that (being hit by a bat, log, car, etc.) there's more than one impact taking place. Sure, there's the impact of your body within the suit, but there's also the impact that takes place between the organs and inside of the body. If you get hit hard enough, no amount of armor is going to save you.

      That liquid armor... neat stuff

That guy explaining how his suit worked was the funniest thing I've seen today. Some people are a bit uber-enthusiastic about what they do (My swimming teacher, for example). I would love to play rugby in one of those, though!

Liquid body armour looks pretty impressive as well, although probably wouldn't intimidate the enemy as much

Yeah, that Bear Suit v2.0 was pretty hilarious. Still, not the kind of thing I'd want to run into in a dark alley. I'm pretty sure someone fighting them would laugh until their lungs collapsed or pass out. Or, you know, crap their pants and run. Maybe both.

Interesting indeed, it really makes you think about how advance we will be in technology in the next century or so. Of course something else will be created to penetrate it.

I love the idea of the troops being more safe.... but there's 2 major weakness's to this.

      1. what happens if you fall down? Do you just stay there cause you cant get up?

      2. If you got shot in the balls you would still die (or wish u died). And if you got shot it would leave one hell of a bruise!

      Keep trying scientists!!

Turret gunners in HMMWVs use them. They're not doing much room clearing sitting up in that turret, so falling over and getting shot in the nuts isn't a problem.

My flak jacket, with hard armor inserts can stop .30 caliber rifle rounds. It would break most of my ribs and probably cause a bit of internal bleeding though. My helmet can only stop 9mm bullets though...

      Anyway...

Nah. It only stiffens up when hit at a high enough velocity. When moving your body fluidly, it would become more malleable. (sp?)

I saw this stuff on the Discovery channel a while back. Very cool shit.

I was watching a show called "Future Weapons" and ironically it showed a body armor called "dragon skin" which after getting shot with high calibur rounds can also stop one of the strongest gernades.
