Hmm. What about Solid Snake? Doesn't he have to think inside the box?

I did college, I did the army, college more fun.
You do learn some interesting stuff in the army, get some unique experiences, but I was so glad my contract (4,5 years) was over. But it's a learning curve I guess. Finishing college will give you better chances in the army (start higher in hierarchy). BTW I was in the royal Dutch army, not the US.

Join the army, travel the world, meet interesting people... and shoot them.

hey, I'm in the air force. What questions do you have?
If you're gonna get in this is the service to be in. They take better care of their people than army, and even the army knows it, but they will try everything to get you to join with them. I've been in for 3 years now and I feel incredibly stuck. The benefits are great and the pay is pretty good, but I still have this feeling of being stuck. It's just the very feeling of someone else owning you and being in control of your life. I don't like the feeling. On the other hand, I have alot of things other 23 year olds might not. My job is pretty laid back and chill, but then when it comes time to deploy it's a b*tch! I'll be getting deployed here shortly to watch third country nationals do construction or clean bathrooms or whatever else...for the SECOND TIME! It'd be okay except that their is another airman that is dying to go(and meets all requirements and qualifications) that works with me, yet they send me. It's things like that that make me wanna bang my head againts the wall! Not to mention the fact that I had a 3 month old the first time and legally didn't have to go because they give you six months to heal inside and bond and whatever else, but I went ahead and did it anyway despite the doctors telling me no. You think they noticed that and give me a break this time...nope! I swear it's a secret conspiracy or something because everyone I told is like, "WTF, Why again!?". That's just how it is.Now when all the moms are telling their little newborn stories,I don't really have any.It makes me sick! Anyways, The dessert is gonna be about 120F degrees or hotter. Then we have to wear these stupid flak vest that weigh...I dunno...30lbs or something which make it 10 times hotter. So yeah, the air force is great until they decide to deploy you, unless of course it's the extra deployment money you are wanting. Myself, on the other hand, would like to stay here with my family, but hey...When I get back I'll be buying something good with all that money I earned.
Okay that's just an overview of my personal experience. Not trying to rant, but I'd figure it's give you perspective on a disgruntled military member seeing as how there are lots of us, but then again that's every job I spose. I threw in a few positives as you can see. It's not all that bad really overall. If you have any other questions then I'll try to answer them.

Oh yeah and if you are scared to get an anthrax shot, don't get in. They make you now. I just thought I'd throw that in there seeing as how some people have decided it was worth loosing their job over. Also...I just got mine today and I'm scurred...scared of the long term affects it may have. The government likes to hide those things ya know.Okay I'm done now for real this time.

Here the army service is mandatory. It is 3 years for men, and something like 1.6 years for women. But if you really want you can get out of it, by pretending you are crazy or on drugs or something.

I'v been in the army, and it was the biggest mistake of my life.
The only thing I learned there, is never to do such a mistake again: To NEVER let myself get dragged into something just because it is the social norm, and there is pressure from the family.

A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service
and compassion are the things which renew humanity.

From what I hear, yes, it's a big mistake.

There's a good chance I am going to join the military because it is something different. You have to be strong both mentally and physically to become a good soldier and unfortunately, some people's bodies and minds are crippled because they do not have the strength. Is being a pawn of America any better than being a slave to society?

If you want a challenge that does not make you kills others, and also helps you mentally and physically more than the army, become a meditation master.

But you need strength when you go into the army and you will gain strength while you are in the army. Perhaps after I am out of the military? I am considering the marines or air force.

If the OP (or anyone else) wants to shoot me some questions, PM me! Dad's in Army Special Forces, I know many, many others in the Army. I'm going to join myself.

Also, the people in the military that I've met, are much smarter and more independent than most civilians I know. They are NOT pawns.

And I know what you mean by not knowing the suffering in the world... My dad was in the '98 Kenya Embassy bombing. He saw hundreds of people die. Someone actually tried to give him their dead baby once...

The strength that you will gain is illusory. Almost all Israelies go to the army, and I beleive they are not strong mentally. Maybe they pretend to be tough.
Learning to kill only weakens you. And if you go to a real combat, then you may die or become crippled, or have a post traumatic stress disorder.

Ok, it was a subjective remark that may not be true for everyone. But the rest of the post are things I learned from experience. The army makes you more violent and less compassionate, if it doesn't kill you first.

I feel like I would like to fight to save other peoples lives, but the current military and police services are really not what I wanted, they are associated with power over the people, which is not what I want.

That isn't true. What you just stated is what the media is telling you. Police officers and military men do great things all the time but that doesn't show up on the news does it? When one of em screws up, you'll never hear the end of it.
