I don't think that would work particularly like that. You see, if you can go to the past as yourself, instead of going to the past as a younger version of you, or not existing(before your birthdate) then you should be just as able to go back to the present after changing some stuff and still be you, instead going back only to realize you are now an african amercian woman with no legs...
I didn't mean change like that, but maybe you change your life so you end up as a drop out. Or even if you end up as a doctor it doesn't matter you wouldn't be yourself. If you believe your experience makes up who you are, then you would no longer be you but someone else. In other words you would basicly be dead and replaced with someone else, with totally different life experience.
Once again that would not happen. You would be the exact same person you were before you left. Otherwise if you go back in time to when you were 3, you would have the mind of yourself when you were 3. Nothing would change in you, your knowledge, and thus your personality, will remain the same...
Your looking at it different. You don't change because you time travel but because what happened. If you went back in time and killed yourself you would no longer exist. Then if you went back to your time your no longer there, but if you never grew up you couldn't have killed yourself so you would have grown up. Which is what causes the paradox.
To be truthful no one can say what will happen if you change your past, which is why its not really safe.
I'll put an end to all this by simply saying that time travel isn't and never will be possible.
Let me ask you this, if time travel were real, why don't we meet time travelers...
And the answer to that is gonna be "Duh..alternate realities.."
But who says alternate realities exist?

i too don't believe time travel will ever be possible. i think we're doomed to always be in this moment. this moment... now it's this moment... and now this moment... the moment you're reading this... see there it went again... and again... your life is passing you by... you're dying every second... you can never leave this moment... ever. you can pretend you've left but the fact is you're still physically in this moment and that will never change.
Everyone sees it different, thats why there is so much fiction about it. Its all fiction though no one can do anything but guess what might happen. I don't really think people will ever time travel either. What might be kind of cool though is if you could like set up a thing and see into the past without going.

I'd hate to think if real creeps ever got a hand of a time machine. Like, you know, rapists and the like. They could theoretically never be caught. :shock:

The example you gave about killing yourself(your past self) does indeed prove itself to be impossible. But when it comes to little changes, changes regarding ones experience and knowledge, I am not quite sure anything will change. Of course I might be terribly wrong.
I have heard that there are two possible ways for time travel:
1. Travel to the past, but it would take an enourmous amount of energy that it is virtually impossible to have.
2. Travel to the future. A friend once told me about this and here's what I remember of how that would work: You need to travel at the speed of light at a certain angle for a certain amount of time. Then you take the same path back to earth. 2 years or so will have gone on in the travelers calendars, but 500 years, or whatever will have gone on for earth..
This too is impossble for now, but who knows if someday we can achieve it. Problem is, you won't be able to go back, ever....
Isn't that what happened in the Planet of the Apes (charleston heston). They like, went 500 years in the future (well earth did)...something like that. I believe that is possible. The past theory seems more unlikely. A lot more unlikely.

Time travel actually IS impossible, not an impossible possibility.
Theoretically, you'd need to travel at the speed of light which is impossible.
Some might say that maybe with advanced technology, people will be able to travel that fast. However, light has no mass (well, infinite mass actually) and the fact is we are always going to have mass, making it an impossibility to travel at the speed of light.
The no mass thing may not be 100% true; I think I read somewhere that they can speed up a atomic particle to the speed of light.
So we couldn't time travel in our "physical" bodies
Time travelling, if it becomes real and used alot, will get very confusing. Take this example:
In 1790, the battle of kings & queens was fought. The kings won and the queens lost.
(Now, it wasn't really, I'm just making it up). Anyway, one day some bloke, let's say Truthbearer, goes to 1790 and tells the queens all the important moves the kings are going to make, so history alters to say something like:
In 1790, the battle of kings & queens was fought. The kings lost, despite the fact they had all the best weapons and artirelly. It was if lady luck was on the queens side- they all seemed to know the next moves the kings were going to make, even the ambushes. This has caused some people to wonder if there was a spy in the kings midst.
Then some girl, let's just say her name is Alice, goes to the Kings and tell them they are going to lose the battle if they make the moves they've got planned out, so history reads something like:
In 1790, the battle of kings & queens was fought. It was a stalemate, because although the Kings had the advantage, the queens fought bravely, but the queens made all the wrong moves. At her death, the head queen said that she was told by an apparation all the kings moves that were going to happen but they didn't happen. This forced the entire population of Kings & Queenstopia to fear apparations and all forms of shadow puppetry were banished because they were believed to make apparations.
Then another person comes along from the future to watch the battle, but they leave early because they get bored and they acciedentaly leave their SuperTronic Space Drive behind (like I said, they came from the future). Because of this, history may read:
In 1790, the battle of kings & queens was fought. It was a a ghastly battle, as the head queen and king both saw an yellow box that was sat on the side of the field. They went over to it at it sucked them into the hypderdemonsial space of Mushroom World, where they were promptly eaten by an elightened bunch of Netgear Wireless routers. Because of this, the two armies joined forces and made up. This spurred another battle with Spain who had agreed with the Queens that they must not be nice to the Kings, however the King and Queens leaders were dead (about 30000 light years from the battle), so Spain attacked England, won since the kings and queens were in bed, and England joined Spain which then attacked France, won and WWII never took place, which in fact never made the radar take off so there was no TV and technology was stilfied for 1000 years until the war of the worlds came along in 2894, where the Aliens of Plural Z alpha easily killed Earth because they had no radar.
This is just an dodgy example, and that was only from 4 people messing with time. If time travel was widespread, and say 300 people visited the famous battle, things would get VERY, VERY messed up.

Kaniaz is right, it would be pretty easy to change the outcome of the world. For example, imagine if one prevents the murder of the Archduke Ferdinand whatever that pretty much started WWI. If it wasn't for WWI, there wouldn't have been a WWII and the U.S would probably not be the economical leader of the world...
But all of this is besides the point...
Kaniaz is right but what if say the U.S. wwere the only ones with the technology of time travel and they went back and got more land and new all of what was going to happen in wars and stuff like Sept. 11.Then it could be used as good.
But it would probably fall into the wrong hands, but that won't stop the power hungry leaders of the future U.S.
The problem is even if you try to do good it might mess stuff up. Going back a few years might not be to bad but the farther you go the harder it will become. Because you have to figure out what the event you changed did to every other event up untill the present.
Like he said, say you stop a war and raido was never made, that will cause huge problems. Can get even worse than that, maybe you missed something and over the years it changes a bunch of little things each time untill it has a huge impact. Then you will have to trace a ton of things back to try and find out what you did, might never even find out what you did.
Or changing something could mean you don't exist in the future.
Hehe, Kaniaz, I can just imagine it, some kind of Time Traveler wars...no good or bad guys, just some guys trying to "Fix" history to what it was, but ultimately forgetting what it really was, or say, creating to many of themselves to fill up the timeline.
In a serious note, if there were time traveling devices in the future, legislation must have been feirce to fight against it, so maybe that's why we don't see any of them (time travelers that is).
Or say there is, but governments of that time are only going to the "Future" to bring technology to advance that timeline. The universes keep aligning themselves to prevent self-destruction.
Think Back to the Future (great movies, great time travel theories). Biff stole the magazine (or something like that) from the future, and gave it to himself in the past. The future changed forward on from 1955 (pretty sure), and the 1985 of that timeline was changed too. The timeline from which the magazine came from didn't exist any longer, but in reality, it still did--the dimension was 'locked up' so to speak(Confusing? You kind of just have to "accept" it I suppose). It existed on a whole new plane.
These sort of intertwine with each other. Old future interference goes to the past. The past becomes new present which becomes new future. However, these "roads" still exist but in different planes of time.

However, the movie brings to mind the question, "wouldn't the events just happen all over again, and set in a paradox?"
We I believe that the timeline they landed in might have been a new one altogether. However, it's just a movie, but a very fun and thought-provoking one :)
Those are the many still unanswerable questions of time travel...
