I always find electric violins a bit 80's, and not in a good way.

I'd stick with the traditional kind, far cooler.

Get a traditional violin and one of those pickups that clip on to the bridge. That would certainly be cheaper than an "electric" violin. As far as amps go, any guitar, bass, or keyboard amp will do just fine. Ideally, you'd want one with an EQ or at least a few tone controls. That way you don't have to worry about the "shrill" tones, as you put it.

I love electric violins. Our son is a pretty accomplished violinist, and occasionally plays an electric in concerts. I want to buy him one, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I wouldn't go with a bass amp. I'd recommend a good modeling amp like a Line 6 so you will have a whole universe of sounds and effects to play with. You will have tone controls on any amp, so the idea that one is going to be "screechy" is kind of absurd unless that's what you want. A guitar amp will be more responsive in the frequency ranges that make a violin sound like a violin.

Learning to play the violin is no small feat though. It is one of the few stringed instruments I cannot play passably. If it were me, I'd start with a student violin and as good a bow as I could afford - you'll find the bow is more important than the instrument, and it will carry over to an electric when you make the switch. But you gotta learn to play first, and you'll learn it right on a real violin.

      IMHO.
