Unbelievable... Bill in US Congress Proposes Draft

Have you guys heard this? From all I can tell it's true: twin bills (H.R.163 and S 89) have been introduced into the US Congress, "To provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes." it's just a modified selective service deal... meaning this doesn't really effect you ffx-dreamz because you're a dude and dude's gotta sign their life away to the gov at 18 anyway. regardless, i wouldn't mind if a cutey like escapist was covering my back in battle. too bad it's 1000:1 to pass a bill like that.

That's flattering, adidas... but I'm pretty sure I'm the last person you'd want covering you in battle. I'm only 5' tall, weighing 113 pounds, and terrified of weapons. This probably wouldn't affect me, either. I'm half-blind and am renowned for illnesses, including juvenile rhumetoid arthritis, heart irregularities, and sudden onset of near paralysis. But I still get really freaked out by the idea...

Hello Escapist! Reading your post reminded me of an article I read not too long ago. http://www.strategypage.com/dls/articles/200459.asp A very interesting read! I hope it gives you some comfort. I, myself, am not worried about the draft. As Baconmastermind said, the President (or any politician, for that matter) knows American support will drop significantly should young men and women be called up for draft duty. But... "There is a form of the draft that might some day be used. There is, for example, a list of yung medical professionals who could be drafted in the event of a major military emergency. The doctors and nurses involved are not all keen on getting called up, but they are not making a lot of noise about their unhappiness. Another list of computer specialists is also under consideration. This concept of only drafting the "best and the brightest" has not, yet, been controversial." Read the whole article. Its very good!

Yea that bill won't pass. The clear and present danger clause of the current draft would be as far as civilians will want it to get to a real draft.

Honestly, I don't want the draft to be instituted. I don't want someone who has been forced into the military to cover my back. They aren't totally committed to the job. Who would really, if they had no choice in the matter? Like I said before, military isn't for everyone. It's not a slam against them. It just not for them, and there isn't anything wrong with that.

well you see... bills are introduced to the house of represenatives... bush doesn't really have any power until the bill is passed by them (which it won't be).

Yea if you want to call someone stupid you should check who proposed the bill. Which is rangel for anyone who lives in New York who wants to call him up and tell him hes stupid. Also want to point out he is a democrate who voted against the war. He thinks if everyone is drafted we wont go to war unless its very important. Though I agree with everyone here and think its a stupid idea.

I believe a bill of that nature will pass. And there is really nothing the people can do. The president has the power to create and change around previous executive orders as he see fits. Anyway they need to increase the military because we do not have enough troops if we are going to occupy Iraq till time indefinate. Eventually there will be a permante Base there just like our bases in Germany, Japan, France, Puerto Rico, and other countries too many to mention. Anyway when we go to war with North Korea we will need the additional manpower.

Lol don't forget Russia, China, France (especially France), Iran, various other nations in the Middle East, and basically any other nation that American deems 'a threat to democracy', cause that's the only way to run a country!

But to force 18-year-old girls out into military service overseas (or into a bunker with 25-year-old male comrades, for that matter) would be the most insane bullshit ever. It takes about 2 braincells to figure that out.

The bases in Germany, Japan and others that Switch mentioned are not permanent. We are there at the invitation of their goverments. If they asked us to leave, we would and in my humble opinion, we should. Maybe I'm wrong, but I consider many of these countries to be perfectly capable of defending themselves. Charles Rangel and Fritz Hollings are men with a fear-mongering agenda. They know the draft is not needed. They're just out to make some head's turn and get a buzz going. It's the art of real politicks! I agree with Alric. Charles Rangel is an idiot and doing nothing to help the Democratic party, which seems to be so out of touch these days. I can only see the Draft being reinstated if we're looking at a war on a massive scale, like World War 2. We're not any where close to that. We have plenty of volunteers in the Armed Services. If they were so badly needed in one place, then they'd certainly be pulled out of the many areas where they are not needed.

I can remember when the draft was abolished in 1973 and can remember signing up for selective service in 1979. Daeraug has made the best point. You would rather have a volunteer that believes in what he is doing watching your back. I am a little concerned with some of our reservests though. Many of them got into the reserves just for the paycheck. Now they are on the frontlines in Iraq. Oh well, our army is now in the finest shape it has ever been in. Enlistment standards are higher now than when I was younger. Back then, they would take about everyone including highschool dropouts and people joining to avoid a prison sentance. Enlisted men now are expected to have a diploma or GED, officers are expected to have a college degree. Oh well, I'll stop after this: I don't think there will be a draft again. If America herself were ever threatened with an invasion on our soil, I think the recruiting office would be so flooded that they would have to turn half of them away.

If I remember right, Finland (yay) has something like this, but it only applies to men. It's like a choice of one year of social work or two years of the army. But it's not like the Finnish army does anything anyway.
