      Why do people steal things?

This is not urgent enough to be in the help section.

I'm not 100% percent sure but I have reason to believe my nephew stole some things from me. Right now sadly his innocents hovers around 30% from all the thinking I've been doing.

He "took" some yugioh trading cards I've been collecting over the years. Five cards maybe more. Around 200$ market value. Something I wouldn't replace considering they were all together. Why?

I don't understand why people take things. I use to (or probably did) around 4-9, but since then I gained a level of morals. He's in 6th grade, maybe he hasn't matured enough...

He steals because you haven't whooped his ass, that's why. Get to it. And have some fun while you're at it.

You don't show them how to respect you by beating them, that teaches violence and no discipline whatsoever.

You have to come down to his level and speak to him eye to eye, make him feel uncomfortable but talk in a calm voice but serious, don't hit the kid whatever you do, that solves nothing. You have to tell him upfront that stealing is one of the worst things someone can do. Also make an example...ask him how he would feel if you stole his personal property.

And talk to his parents of course.

Yeah just embarrass him by talking about it to his parents in front of him. Should work wonders.

Kids don't have much of a conscience, especially if it means lie or get punished. They will always opt for lying.

First, I would tell him I know he took them and give him the chance to return them, no questions asked and no consequences. If he refuses, then go to the parents and hope they're not the type that think their kid can do no wrong. I am assuming you are positive it was him.

Hang him off the roof of a building and see what falls out of his pockets.

Tell him that you will inform his doctor that he has a urethral infection unless he gives them back.

I steel sometimes, but only in fun, I eventually give the stuff back. I just make a game out of it, see how long it takes for the person to notice it's missing...

At the store sometimes people play the "how much will they pay" game and add stuff to the persons reciept bill and if the person pays for it you get just take it when you leave that day hehe.

Sometimes I buy some guns and rob the local bank. I give it all back of course, some years later.

There really are alot of reasons people steal:

      1) Hunger
      2) Poverty
      3) Addiction
      4) Compulsion
      5) Mental disorder

      For me it was 3)...Addiction

I stole lots of money from my folks to support my habit a long time ago...and ever since then I have taken an oath to never let myself do that again...which is why im financing my habit myself..
