Howetzer, I just saw the movie "Searching for Bobby Fischer"! I laughed.. I cried.. I became one with that movie!

I could totally relate to everyone (the mother, the father, the little boy, heck even his chess teacher who was battling demons of his own)!
Who would have thought that a movie about chess could teach you so much about how you should live your life?

[color=green]No I don't. If you are asking in the literal sense. Quite the opposite. My true understanding of the game is far beyond my reaches! And always will be. Any game that can incorporate the adversaries personality the way chess can will always be an ever cahnging game. I can't comprehend.

The sad part is that most people who watched that movie probably didn't.
I don't mean to be negetive about society. But to look at the way that movie the way you did does not happen too often, from my own personal experiance. To me, there are so many hidden meanings in most movies. Maybe they were not even intended, I don't know. But I get something out of them.

SleepSpirit, Confidence is a great thing!
Some people who lack confidence often misconstrue it as arrogance. So more power to you.

No I'm impressed that you see the mathematical combinations possible in the game. Most people don't see that. Like the combinations on the lottery. The chess board only having 8 blocks wide and 8 deep being 64 squares. It’s hard to conceive of an almost infinite number of games. Only a person who thinks geometrically as you know doubt do would see that. I’m impressed. I'm not a pro at the game but like playing people that are, even though I get my ass kicked often enough. I’m not a genius but have had a friend that is. That’s why I learn or learned what I know. My best buddy who worked for aerospace has passed on now and I only have an occasional game on the web (msn game room). I thought maybe you or someone who knows more about this wed sight could figure a way to get a game started. I'm really dumb when I come to web sights but I'm learning.

The only people I have played over the web is on Playsite.com You can make an account and get a user password. Then log on and play almost anygame you can think of. They have differant rooms for each game.
The only problem I have is that I have a dial-up service provider and it is so slow to load into rooms that I get kicked of a lot. Once I get in the room or a game, it seems fine.
There are a couple other popular sites that pertains to games. There name escapes me right now.

I'll check it out. I thought maybe we could start a game room for the LDers forum. But not sure if that’s possible without a programmer being involved.

If you look earlier in the Post Kaniaz had suggested, and I agree that this forum would not be the most appropriate place for a chess room.
For you and I and a couple others, sure. It would be great. But eventually others would suggest a poker room a scrabble room etc. Eventually leading to topics not remotely related to dreaming.

New age devices tarnish a timeless game.
http://webmail.adelphia.net/webedge/...l/message/view

I guess there are cheaters in every sport.
When I used to play online there were people who would be rated very high and just throw a game. Then their standings would not throw them in with the BIG boys! It would end up casting me into a forum of players I was no match for. Don't get me wrong. I think I would prefer to play a good game and loose than a crappy one and win.

Then you would get the inevitable person who you can tell by their systematic moves that they have theie little battery chess game on 'Expert' and are emulating it's moves.

There is something lost playing online. Much like poker, I like to see body gestures facial expressions. Much more entertaining and interactive.

I am a chess player, and used to play a lot last summer when I had time to sport such a hobby.

I agree with you that there is something lost when you play online. I personally hate playing online, as cheating and bad sportsmanship are rampant pretty much anywhere you play (though this is true for a lot of online games).

Hey M Cat
Time aaah yes. I think that is why I can't get too many people to play. Time.

Pawn E4 I use the most. I do not know the name off that opening. Do you?

I work well with my knights. I don't know why I do not try and bring them out earlier.

Meh, chess..... I never really like chess... Its so mainstream that the moves become predictable. Everyone knows the good strategies and stuff. I prefer strategy games like this where you can actually set up your side of the board thus killing almost all stagnent strategies.

Kings's Pawn Opening

My favorite opening is the King's Gambit, for some reason I am just very good with it.

Oh, I tried tactics arena once. I remember I couldn't figure out how to play and got called a noob I partly agree with you that chess CAN get predictable, however, there are so many possibilities (more possible games than there are particles in the universe) that only in Grandmaster games can games get really predictable.

Kings's Pawn Opening..cool. Thanks

I don't know where you live arby, but chess is far from mainstream where I live. I wish.

And predictable? Maybe the beginning and end games. ~ Sometimes, but what manifest from those is never the same. If it is, then you may be a grandmaster, like M cat said. Which if that is the case. You should quit you day job.

I love chest. It is one of the few games that doesnt include luck. I dont like games with dice rolls or coin flips but chess has none of that.

That is a good point.
Although I have considered some of my wins lucky.

Ya Keeper. I saw that in (What came down the chimney for you thread)
Which one did you get? Some make it so unique because you can Tailor so many aspects to your liking.

In casual play. Since there are no actual rankings, What is the proper way to see who gets to go first. As I find it a nice advantage to be white.
Anyone know?

I got eGames 3D Chess

It is pritty cool, and I like being able to see arount the whole board from every angle, as well as choose board and set type. My Favourit is the Egyptian board, with Nefertiti as Queen, a typical Pharo's head as King, Scarabs as Pawns, Anubis/Seth as Knights, Priests as Bishops, and Obalisks as Rooks.

it also has some nice music playing well you fight, but it can get a bit distracting (I blaim my lossess on that )

(Oh, and it Does have a bit of luck involved. mostly with people. You just have to hope they cant see why you are lining up two Rooks just infront of his "protected" King [saved my ass a couple of times with this tequnique ])

Chess? Oh, man, I haven't played in ages. I used to be pretty good. I have a nice handcarved like 40 year old chess set with a dyed leather chessboard, but I fucked up the chessbnoard by spilling something on it and it's ruined. I still have the chess pieces though.

Hey howie, or anyone else - keen for a game of online chess or something sometime, if we can find a way to do it?

ahh I remeber the days...I wasn't, you know, cool enough to be on the actual chess team...but I went to their room at lunch.

and we play Alan Parsons Project casettes...

and we were badass

(that and I played a few times on the internet against other people. but I cheated, and had a program tell me exactly what move bobby fisher would play...no one could stop my Sicilian Dragon tactic..especially when I was black player...)

Wow, Chess really is cool. I had it on my phone for the longest time. Don't play it very much lately. I can't remember ever learning how to play, seems kind of odd now that I think about it. I remember really starting to like chess a lot when I had Battlechess on my pc. I loved watching the pieces fight eachother. Each one had a certain way that it killed another piece. The fun in the game was trying to change your strategies to kill your enemies with certain pieces. The rook turns into a giant rock monster thing and walks over to the queen and swallows her whole. That one was my favorite.

There certainly are ways to play online.
Calling all Blue Meanines

I told myself I would not play online any more after some bad experiences.
Another friend had talked me into playing with him online. Although the experience was not corrupt, like my other experiences, it was lacking. It always will.
This is the same person I have played with in person.
Maybe what I lack in fundamentals and memory I make up with an attention to body language.
▫ Their body language, tense, arrogant, nervous, pissed etc.
▫ How long they actually take.
▫ Where their eyes are moving to and from.
▫ Where their hands want to go.

It must be a lot like poker and other card games. I do not play cards too often and I do not know that many games really.
~ But any one that plays cards, is something lost in translation via the net when played too?

Well, why else do they where those cool shades?
