It's both. The Japanese and Chinese languages share a lot of characters, but they mean different things.

looks somewhat like the japanese symbol for 'forest'..but I think lost soul is right.

Yeah, the first thing I did was print it out and take it to a Chinese friend that sits next to me.

Seeker and Lost soul win. Lost soul a little moreso. Originally it's chinese, but yeah it's both actually. And the main thing it means is heaven, although it can mean different things in different contexts. But all relating to the great expanse over men's heads. Alright so here's something trippy - the reason I put it on here (I don't tell many people the significance of this but I think you guys would appreciate it) is that I have a very tiny birthmark on my right hand between my thumb and forefinger. It looks like a mole if you don't look closely. But about a year ago when I really started delving into myself, trying to become a better soul and such, I was sitting all alone one day and I looked at it very closely. It looked to me like some Asian character, I thought. So I searched for a long time until I found an exact match. It is the symbol called "Tian". That's the symbol on my avatar, which means heaven. Pretty trippily awesome, yeah? Well, i was pretty stoked.
