      how many words in...

the average novel chapter? Please don't tell me as many as needed. I need some comparison for my pacing, and my attention to details.

      There is no average number.

      Every novel is different.

Let's then take 2 or more novels similar in length, writing style and find the average between their chapters.

edit: Let me predict a response before someone says it!

"That wouldn't work, you'll just find their own averages and not your own"

Yes of course, but it would still give me some basis for comparison.

It really is as many as needed. Divide the novel into chapters according to a change in theme, focus, or plot, etc. Any reason that seems to cause a shift in something in the novel can be given it's own chapter.

I don't think average means what you think it means.

Don't listen to this guy, he reads books with only one chapter in them.

I suppose this is helpful. I just have a hard time at this because it feels so awkward dividing stuff up, especially when two chapters are connected together as in parts. So far I'm about halfway done with my first and I'm estimating it to be around 6,000 words.

The introduction to Jurassic Park has ~610 words in it.

The prologue has ~3920 words in it.

The average chapter has ~3199 words in it.

Well I'll see after I finish it and edit it. There may be a few parts I can cut out and save for later.
