      Cooking

I truly am not COMPLETELY hopeless. There are lots of things I can make that aren't pre-packaged lol So please don't pick on me too much over my question.

What is the proper way to make hard-boiled eggs?
I'm sure I always overcook mine. They still taste good, but I want to know how to do it right so I can set a timer to it.
I've read that you're supposed to place the eggs on the bottom of a pot, cover it with water, and cook over med./high heat. Then, when the water starts to boil, you place a lid on the pot, turn off the burner and set the eggs in the pot aside for 15 minutes.

Do I do that when the water is at a slow boil or a rapid boil?

I used to just cook mine over low/medium heat until the eggs floated, then I'd drain the water and set them aside to cool.

      Google is your friend.

I've found countless cooking tips and tricks from google, so I highly suggest using the endless source of info that is the internet.

For hard-boiled eggs, I put them in a pot of water (lid or no lid, it doesn't matter IMO), and once the water starts to boil I set a timer for 8-10 minutes. Usually 8, because I'm too hungry to wait.

High-ish heat is good. If the heat is turned all the way up, the eggs will make a lot of noise bumping around in there.

I also add a little bit of salt to the water in the beginning. This helps to keep the shell intact.

When they are finished, drain the water and immediately pour in some cold water to cool the eggs off. This will make peeling the shell really easy.

      Thank you.
I used google but none of the sites I glanced at specified when to remove the eggs- at a low boil or a rapid boil, or if it really even mattered which lol.

I use salt as well, simply because my mom did. I didn't realize it helped keep the shell intact.

Pretty much how I do mine, I bring to boil a pot of water, with salt. and then leave for about 8 minutes, trying to to boil the water too much.

You just gotta make sure to not cook the egg too long to overcook it.
This was that cult, and the prisoners said it had always existed and always would exist, hidden in distant wastes and dark places all over the world until the time when the great priest Cthulhu, from his dark house in the mighty city of R'lyeh under the waters, should rise and bring the earth again beneath his sway.

I let the water boil first without the egg in. Obviously make a tiny holy in the egg so the air can escape or whatever the reason is, have the pot filled with water so the egg is nearly entirely underwater when you put it in the pan. Then I turn the heat on 4-6 out of 10 or so, and let it boil for about 8 minutes. Afterwards, drain the water and I cool the eggs off by using some cold water.

Lid matters imo. But not concerning how the egg is actually cooked or how it will end up, rather in time. No lid = hot air escapes = takes a little longer. Lid = hot air escapes not nearly as much = takes a little shorter.

You poke a hole in your egg? Never heard of that...

I put 'em in a big Dutch oven, put in plenty of water and a bit of salt, get them up to a rolling boil, then let them boil for about ten minutes. I let them sit for a few minutes, then drain and cover with cold water, sometimes adding a bit of ice if I'm in a hurry. Then I peel them, cut in half, and proceed to make the best damned deviled eggs you've ever had in your life.

Is it just me, or does anyone else hate the smell of eggs?

Why would you wanna poke a hole in your egg?

I put salt in the water because I heard it would help it boil faster. Is it true?
Friends, I always thought everyone did it but it seems i'm the only one.
Try to add soya sauce on your hard-boiled egg.

ps. Yes it does smell really bad, kind of like a fart

In short, no. It actually raises the boiling point of the water, which makes the food cook faster. However, it takes a lot more salt than you probably use to do anything.

Until you posted that, I too thought it made the water boil faster. Then I got to thinking, and decided to look it up to answer you. Thanks for making me think! I learned something from that.

I, too, always thought it made the water boil faster. That's why my mom uses it.
And I, too, HATE the fart-smell of eggs lol

Wouldn't poking a hole in your egg make it boil out into the water?

Here's a "recipe" my kids and I love:
I add some Ramen to a pot after breaking it in half in the package and then breaking it in half again. Then I add about 4 eggs (no shell lol). As the water starts boiling, I break up the egg. When the noodles are done, I drain most of the water, add half of the season packets (I normally use 4 packs of Ramen), and then serve. Sometimes I'll add corn or peas to the noodles right before they're done cooking.
It's very yummy and super easy to make.

Zhalyin, no the egg will not fall out..

A small poke not a BIG one. Nothing will leak out.

To keep your yolks from turning green and tasting like stinky sulphur, don't overcook the eggs.

Put the eggs in a pan with room temperature water.
Bring the water to a boil, covered.
As soon as the water starts to boil, remove the entire pan from the heat, and set it aside for 17 minutes.
Then, pull the eggs out of the pot and place the eggs in ice water to cool them. This makes them easier to peel.

Do not boil your eggs for 10 minutes. The will kill them. Try it this way, and I'm sure you will be hugely surprised at how good they are.
