The word 'psychobabble' doesn't actually mean anything, whereas the words I used do. I come from precisely the same kind of region, w/ 25% as a conservative estimate. I'm aware that we're the only viable predator for deer and I'm not saying hunting is bad and wrong--just stating observations based on my experience. Lots of people go out hunting a handful of times in their lives and may or may not enjoy it when they do it but aren't drawn back to it. About 100% of the guys I've known who go out every year have a violent streak that comes out physically or verbally with those closest to them. It's strictly anecdotal, but it's what I've seen.

With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

Idolfan, Just because I hunt does not mean i'm not a Christian.

Actually in my neck of the woods, humans are the only predators of deer. I can't tell you how many deer i have seen dead on the side of the road in the past few days. Sense Sunday alone, There have been 7 deer that I have seen in my yard. There is no other animal around here that will hunt and kill a deer except for a dog but, a dog will never catch a deer that is in good health. If deer aren't weeded out then starvation and diseases can destroy a large group of anmials concentrated in one area. I usually get my limit for the season. i'll keep a deer or two for myself then i will donate the others to a local organization that uses the deer meat to feed the hungry in our community.

Also, in 2000 hunter's and fihermen provided 3.7 billion dollars towards wildlife conservation and management.

So nice try on trying to push my buttons again Idolfan but it didn't work

      Ok davej

You seem to think I am trying to push your buttons for some kind of sadistic pleasure well no wonder you thought that with your kind of role model. It's not. I am just shocked at finding someone with your worldview. Put it this way... it's far more secular here in England so me meeting you is like you meeting a chronically fallen Muslim from the Middle East who beats his wife and breeds like a rabbit. As you see I am trying to refrain myself from leaving sly or irony exposing comments because I have already been told off twice.

This whole feud started with your comments in my thread "I am scared of hell", and I didn't forget your username after that very easily.

However your comment on deer population problems is actually rather sufficient; but I hope you'll understand why I had an instinctive intolerance to hunting in the first place.

I object to hunting for the sport of it. If you're going to kill animals, at least put them to good use.

taosaur a majority of the hunters i encounter are peacefull family oriented people, i sorry your experiences were negative, but its a little stereotypical to assume being a hunter contributes to domestic violence( i personally advocate for hunters to beat their wives with a open hand, opposed to a clenched fist) just kidding

Idolfan, I don't really care if you are trying to push my buttons or not, It doesn't bother me one bit. What i posted the first time in your i'm scared of hell post was not to offend you but to give you my point of view. thinking back on that post, did you take my advice and talk to a priest, preacher, religious advisor about it like i said?
Like you, in a way, I have an intorerance to certain types of hunters. Those who go out and kill just to put the big buck on the wall, or those who spot light at night, etc... Illegal hunters, you get the picture. I also have an intolerance for those who put out corn, accorn, apples, etc... and wait for the deer to come and eat. I also have an intolerence for those who hunt with dogs that will drive the deer to you.
I enjoy the hunt, I like getting out and walking the woods, scouting out areas, finding game trails and waiting... a deer's sense of smell, eye sight, and hearing is far greater then a human's. They can detect us before we even come anywhere near them.
For example, I went out hunting a few years back and i climbed up into a tree. I was watching the woods and off in the distance (way to far to get a shot off) i saw several does with a big buck. I watched them for a few mintues through binoculars and they were moving along without a care in the world. i saw one of the does throw her head up and it was obvious that she was smelling somthing in the air. At that point, I knew she had found me, not by sight but by sent. Needless to say, they turned and ran off. I did end up going down wind and tracked them and ended up taking one.
What i'm getting at is it is more sportsman like and more fair to the deer if you really hunt them instead of just baiting them in or whatever.

I have no desire to ever kill a deer, and I even have a desire not to. But... if I did seek to kill deer, I would have no ethics about it. I would be all gung ho about the idea of leaving bait, shining a spotlight, and spraying down whole groups of deer with a pair of uzis. If you enjoy killing deer, why not?
      You are dreaming right now.

Come on ,give the guy a break.
I don't think he "just enjoys killing deer" he's said he enjoys the nature of the hunt, the tactics, the strategy, he's also said he enjoys being out in the woods. I think that's fair enough, its a pretty natural thing. We've hunted for thousands of years, I've never hunted myslef and don't desire to, but I imagine it makes the hunter feel alive.

I went hunting twice this month, first time we saw nothing, second time we snuck up on a herd of elk (humungous ones, was awesome), and one deer. The deer got away, we stalked it for a bit but it was too elusive. Fun stuff though.

Sorry to hear about the one that got away. Is it Elk season? Did you try for an Elk? Better luck next time!!!
I'm getting out in the woods Saturday and can't wait!!! Lots of signs and rubs. Wish me luck!

Dave, is there a way to buy deer meat from anybody who is not a hunter? Is it legal to buy it at some kind of wild game store or anything?
As far as buying deer meat, last time I checked it is illegal. There are some hunters who will sale it "under the table" but you have to know people. Like I siad, I will donate a few of my deer to an organization who use the meat to feed the hungry. I have also given deer meat away to neighbors and friends. i wouldn't charge friends or family for the meat. i also wouldn't sale to someone I didn't know because you never know who they may be. Find a check in station. You can find one on you local wildlife agency website. Maybe you can go and hangout there and see if you can meet up with a hunter that would be willing to give some meat away.
