I object to hunting for the sport of it. If you're going to kill animals, at least put them to good use.

You guys are making me hungry now. I've never eaten deer, but it sounds incredibly delicious

taosaur a majority of the hunters i encounter are peacefull family oriented people, i sorry your experiences were negative, but its a little stereotypical to assume being a hunter contributes to domestic violence( i personally advocate for hunters to beat their wives with a open hand, opposed to a clenched fist) just kidding

Idolfan, I don't really care if you are trying to push my buttons or not, It doesn't bother me one bit. What i posted the first time in your i'm scared of hell post was not to offend you but to give you my point of view. thinking back on that post, did you take my advice and talk to a priest, preacher, religious advisor about it like i said?
Like you, in a way, I have an intorerance to certain types of hunters. Those who go out and kill just to put the big buck on the wall, or those who spot light at night, etc... Illegal hunters, you get the picture. I also have an intolerance for those who put out corn, accorn, apples, etc... and wait for the deer to come and eat. I also have an intolerence for those who hunt with dogs that will drive the deer to you.
I enjoy the hunt, I like getting out and walking the woods, scouting out areas, finding game trails and waiting... a deer's sense of smell, eye sight, and hearing is far greater then a human's. They can detect us before we even come anywhere near them.
For example, I went out hunting a few years back and i climbed up into a tree. I was watching the woods and off in the distance (way to far to get a shot off) i saw several does with a big buck. I watched them for a few mintues through binoculars and they were moving along without a care in the world. i saw one of the does throw her head up and it was obvious that she was smelling somthing in the air. At that point, I knew she had found me, not by sight but by sent. Needless to say, they turned and ran off. I did end up going down wind and tracked them and ended up taking one.
What i'm getting at is it is more sportsman like and more fair to the deer if you really hunt them instead of just baiting them in or whatever.

I have no desire to ever kill a deer, and I even have a desire not to. But... if I did seek to kill deer, I would have no ethics about it. I would be all gung ho about the idea of leaving bait, shining a spotlight, and spraying down whole groups of deer with a pair of uzis. If you enjoy killing deer, why not?

Come on ,give the guy a break.
I don't think he "just enjoys killing deer" he's said he enjoys the nature of the hunt, the tactics, the strategy, he's also said he enjoys being out in the woods. I think that's fair enough, its a pretty natural thing. We've hunted for thousands of years, I've never hunted myslef and don't desire to, but I imagine it makes the hunter feel alive.

You need to calm down with your moralism. What's wrong with killing animals? It's the way the world works. We kill, we eat, we get stronger, we survive. It's the natural order, nobody here's saying you shouldn't be a vegetarian, but who are you too judge sombody for doing what people have done for thousands of years, meat is an essential part of our diet that got us into the position we are in, a highly developed, highly intelligent species.

I'm against hunting mainly because it's detrimental to the environment. Just look at Sarah Palin.

I hope that statement was a joke. It is the exact opposit. the absence of hunting is detrimental to the environment. Hunters are the main deer population managers.
      just read the following articles...

      http://biology.wsc.ma.edu/biology/st...popmodel/deer/

      http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/PGC_testimony.aspx
      http://www.uri.edu/personal/gmar9537/main.html

These are just a few sites that talk about over population of deer. You can find more on your own if you would like.

I wasn't making fun of Dave. I was just making a point about people who really get a charge out of killing deer, and those people are out there in large numbers. I think about a quarter of my state is like that. I was saying that for a person who likes to kill deer, there is no point to ethics about how to kill them.

actually you can get into a world of trouble if you aren't ethical. Here in TN the laws range from how far you can hunt from a road to not being able to hunt a baited area to the time of day you can hunt. If you are caught, there are major fines as well as having your gun and even your vehicle taken away.

And just to let you know i have a heart, I live in the country so I do have deer comeing into my yard. i was in the laundry room which has a window that over looks the back yard. I saw a very large doe coming up through the woods heading towards the house. I decided to get my bow (bow season is in now) and go ahead and take my first deer. I was going to ease out of the front door and around the house to where she was. When i got to the cornor of the house, i noticed to very young deer following her. Now the young deer are suppose to be able to manage own their own by now. I stayed quiet and still and watched them for about 10 minutes. one of the younger deer tried to drink milk from his mother but she kept kicking him away (she was weening him). As much as I enjoyed watching the creatures and as funny as it got at times I couldn't bring myself to kill that doe. 1st reason, she was still "responsible" for the younger ones and number 2.. heck i just enjoyed watching them up close and personal.
They kept looking at me but didn't seem scared so i stepped away from the house to give them a better view of myself. I was only about 15 feet from the big doe and she just looked at me for a few minutes... She stomped her foot a couple of times, snorted and as i took a slow step closer, they were gone in the blink of an eye. I wish my wife and daughter would have been home to have watched them but I really enjoyed it. it had to be the highlight of my day.

      Ain't no thing.

Dave, I am not against deer hunting. I love deer meat and would be a hypocrite if I opposed it. I just would hate to shoot a deer myself. In talking about ethics, I was just talking about a hunter's own personal ethics with deer, not how they need to deal with the law.

I would love to hunt a deer but lack the training and the weapon (I have a 38 Special but ammo is so darned hard to find nowadays that I don't get to practice and I SERIOUSLY doubt I could take down an animal with it).
I wouldn't hunt for sport either but for the food. My family lives mostly on Ramen lol (not completely true, but some times it's close).
Plus, I live out in the middle of nowhere and I'm afraid to drive at night. I've lost count of all the deer carcasses on the side of the road. Certain stretches of my country road are even "painted" red from coal and logging trucks that practically obliterate the poor creatures.

If I was in an absolute survival situation, I would have no trouble baiting prey. But with the grocery store and proper money management it just doesn't seem fair.

Is ther anything wrong (or "dangerous") about eating an animal you hit with your car (supposing you could properly bleed it in a timely fashion)?
I always imagined the organs or something would rupture and pollute the meat?

I know this sounds really red neck but there is nothing wrong with eating a deer you have hit as long as it wasn't complete destroyed. I hit one about 5 years ago. it wasn't dead so i shot it to put it out of its misery. after shooting it, i asked myself the same quesiton. It was during the summer so I called the local PD to see if i could legally take it home and they said I could. I took it home, cleaned it and put it in the freezer. A couple of days later, it was in my crock pot, on my grill, going through my meat grinder etc and it was good! it was a young deer. the younger, the better. A few weeks after that, i hit another one but was on my way to work. I called a buddy of mine and he came and picked it up. it ended up in his freezer. If you hit on and it is in good condition, call your local PD or game warden, make sure you can take it home and it is all yours.

Dave, is there a way to buy deer meat from anybody who is not a hunter? Is it legal to buy it at some kind of wild game store or anything?

I went hunting twice this month, first time we saw nothing, second time we snuck up on a herd of elk (humungous ones, was awesome), and one deer. The deer got away, we stalked it for a bit but it was too elusive. Fun stuff though.

Sorry to hear about the one that got away. Is it Elk season? Did you try for an Elk? Better luck next time!!!
I'm getting out in the woods Saturday and can't wait!!! Lots of signs and rubs. Wish me luck!

As far as buying deer meat, last time I checked it is illegal. There are some hunters who will sale it "under the table" but you have to know people. Like I siad, I will donate a few of my deer to an organization who use the meat to feed the hungry. I have also given deer meat away to neighbors and friends. i wouldn't charge friends or family for the meat. i also wouldn't sale to someone I didn't know because you never know who they may be. Find a check in station. You can find one on you local wildlife agency website. Maybe you can go and hangout there and see if you can meet up with a hunter that would be willing to give some meat away.
