      Most beautiful language?

I dunno, just thinking about languages, what in your opinion is the most beautiful language to listen to? How does Norwegian sound?

Okay, i'm probably going to get people going: for this...but the most beautiful language in the world to me is that unspoken one between two people.

A Spaniard, a Frenchman, and a German are debating which of theirs is the most beautiful language in the world.

The Spaniard says (with a Spanish accent): “Espanish is the most beautiful language in the world. Take our word for ‘butterfly’. Mariposa. This proves that Espanish is the most beautiful.”

The Frenchman says (with a French accent): “Mais oui! But ze most beautiful word in French is papillon. Zis proves zat French is ze most beautiful langage in ze world.”

The German asks (with a German accent): “Und was ist wrong mit Schmetterling?”

French, though a bit of German can be quite nice now and then.

I think Old English has a nice ring to it, although we're only guessing to how it might have sounded. Have a listen to this link, its the lords prayer spoken aloud, circa AD 1000... sure has changed in a millenia and five years eh?

English (even if those who are expressing their undying love for another langauge suspiciously do it in English). Why? Because I can express myself with few symbols, no annoying little twiddly accent symbols and perhaps the whole "learning it first" thing had something to do with it. Most of all, nobody else said it yet so I WAS HERE FIRST! *stomps*

Ha, you guys know my favorite Russian is a language of poetry, whether you'd admit it or not. Also, the depth of just the language (not just the depth of its literature) is phenominal. You can say something using one or two words that would require a whole slough of words in English. I'd be happy to continue, but I won't...until later.

Most beautiful written language... Maybe Arabic, but I haven't seen enough of several others, per say.

I'd probably agree with Irish that unspoken language, when truly understood, can be beautiful.

The debate on the most beautiful language is pretty closely tied with the "best" culture.
Primarily, because the language itself is part of the message. You know? How you say something is as important as what you say. The language, punctuation, and words available, limit, and constrain what you can and cannot say.
But the beauty of language doesn't lie in how you say it. The beautiful part lies in what is said. "Love" is love in any language, for example.
Therefore, the most beautiful language would be one which least constrains those using it, and will most ably articulate exactly what they mean.

For most useful, I'd say English, or Spanish. since you can talk to absolutely frick-loads of people with those.

I love Japanese, and is in my opinion one of the most elegant languages there is, and not only that, it can be strong too. It's very flowing, is what I like about it, and nearly any string of words sounds really cool. At least, it's what I love from anime and videogames. (people in real life doesn't necessarily talk the same way)

Some do, some don't. It all depends. Thanks for being so nice, even if it is just the truth.
