Q. How much vitamin B12 do I need?
A. The National Institutes of Health recommend that healthy adults get 2.4 micrograms of vitamin B12 daily. Women who are pregnant need 2.6 micrograms and women who are breastfeeding, 2.8 micrograms. "Vitamin B 12 is unique as it is really the only B vitamin stored in the body,” says Roberta Anding, RD, CDE, director of sports nutrition at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, and a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. “Most B vitamins have limited storage, but B12 is stored in the liver. Deficiencies, therefore, can often take a long time to develop.” People taking dietary supplements don't have to worry about taking too much, as no ill effects have been shown from excessive intake.
