      Shouting commands

I have a problem shouting commands in a LD, like "more clarity!" and stuff. I either feel too self conscious to scream, thinking I'll be screaming in real life too, or I wake myself up when I do try. It's like I do try to scream in real life, and the mubling I manage through REM paralysis is enough to wake me up! Does anyone have any suggestions for getting around this? I know that shouting the commands will work for me if I could just do it with conviction.

Why do you have to shout or say any commands at all? Can't you simple desire or will something to take place instead?

If I desire to float, I can float. It is just the desire, not a command or phrase said. Perhaps you have some specific reason for doing so?

Onlythatithas been suggested and purported to be quite effective. I guess it's sort of an affirmation of intent. Maybe I should invent some hand signals instead, like a magician's gesture.

You want to shout, but shouting wakes you up, but you still think that for some reason you need to shout.

Now, what great Wisdom of the Ages has convinced you that you have to bellow like an Ox in order to be listened too? I'm afraid you are the victim of some silly advice. The Subconscious Mind would never encourage anybody into something as undignified and ignoble as shouting.

Once, in the heat of battle, Napoleon Bonaparte got off his horse, strided over to a artillery piece, and, aiming it with his own hand, took out an enemy artillery piece that he suspected of aiming at one of his cavalry elements that was scouting for a flanking action. We was asked why he did not simply shout out a command. The General answered that shouting gives the impression of panic, and in battle it is panic that is the worst enemy. Admiral Nelson had much the same philosophy, and with cannon roaring about him, was careful never to raise his voice or in any way to appear excited. The surest sign of Nobility of Soul is Calmness. And Calmness is not shouting like a madman.

No, your Subconscious, while it still is on your side and cares anything about your spiritual future, will never encourage you with your yelling and screaming in dreams. Why its simply disgraceful behavior. If you have a command, then say it in a deep voice that resonates within your chest, loud and resonate enough to be heard across a room, but still just a speaking voice. That is how nobleman speak.

Hm, Thanks Leo! That makes a lot of sense. I seem to disagree with some part of what you said, but it's probably just my predisposition to contradict you by default; I'm trying to work on that.

You know, I don't even take it personally anymore... that is, people's sense that they need to instantly defend themselves. 'Denial' is only natural. The Mind needs this mechanism of innertia in order to give it some steadiness of direction. People tell me 'NO', and then I understand that if they heard me at all, then they will slowly and surely think it through.

I myself am an old man. I have a good memory. I've had many an intellectual argument in which I maintained my point of view, and in many cases I sustained my own case without surrender. But my memory was good. Weeks, months, or even years later I would find myself slowly siding over to the positions I had once argued against.

I heard a Guru once who compared the phenomena to the Mind being a Caterpillar and not a Butterfly. The mind can not fly and light from one leaf to another all in an instant. The mind is like a caterpillar who is at first all on one leaf, but then who begins crawling upon another, first a few legs while most of his legs are still on the old leaf, but gradually he comes over to the new leaf entirely.

A modern Guru compares it by saying that the Mind turns like a Battleship, not like a speed boat.

Leo, I normally have a knee jerk reaction when I see a post by you as I often get the impression that you consider fellow posters
as not your equal intellectually or not as spiritual as you feel they should be when it comes to lucid dream pursuits.

That being said, I gleaned alot from both of your posts in this thread. I loved the stories you related and the meanings behind them. I've often felt that if you really want someone to pay attention to what you have to say.. whisper. And the mind being a caterpillar.. I also found this to be very true.
