Sounds amazing, but why did you just decide to end the dream after trying for 15 hours? Did you just lose control?

I started to lose control, yes. I could have easily brought everything back into focus via the spinning technique but decided that I'd been asleep long enough. I don't want to spend my entire vacation in bed after all!

What time did you accomplish this? After 5 hours of sleep? Before bed?


How did you stay awake until you heard the sounds?

I wait for a sign that I'm losing consciousness. Said sign finally arrived in the form of hypnagogic sounds. An epiphany struck at that moment, these sounds constantly manifest when I am in bed. I always assumed it was some response of the human ear to lack of stimuli. How stupid I was! If this is a doorway into lucid dreams, that door makes itself available to me most every night![/b]

. . . . what did they sound like? I think i may be experiencing something similar to this.

It's like a combination of ringing and buzzing. The buzzing portion of the sound may feel as though it resonates throughout your body.

After about five hours of uninterrupted sleep, I woke up, went to the restroom, got a drink of water, and went back to bed. The sounds came quickly as I was already in "sleep mode" so to speak. I would say within about fifteen minutes I started hearing them. You basically must will yourself to stay awake by constantly acknowledging that you are aware of your own consciousness. Cogito, ergo sum.

P.S. I hear doing mathematics to hold on to your consciousness helps too.

Congratulations! Being able to WILD is a great asset in LDing.

I've never been able to stay conscious long enough to experience intense hypnagogic imagery. If I do something to maintain consciousness, it will eventually lead me to one of my interests, and I'll never fall asleep once I get thinking about something. I might just give that math trick a try, though.

Most people suggest doing 2x2=4, 4x2=8, 8x2=16, 16x2=32, and so on. It's nice and simple but still requires enough concentration to keep your mind busy. I wonder if it would help imagining oneself writing these sequences out on a piece of paper? I’ve heard a lot of talk about daydreaming leading into dreaming lately.

Congrats on your first WILD!

I've managed to get to the sleep paralisis stage a few times, rapid heart beat, quick breathing and the noises, but I've never made it all the way to a WILD.

I did have a cool paralisis experience the other night though. I woke up and was paralized. Normally this would freak me out and I would think that there was a demon in the room, but this time I realized what it was and stayed calm. I figured I might as well go back to sleep, so as I started back to sleep there was a buzzing going around the room. It was the sound of a VERY large bee. It flew around the room a few times and then came right up to my right ear and buzzed in my ear, then flew over to the left ear and did the same. Then it flew up by the celing and then flew straight down and in my left ear and out my right ear! It was just an amazing experience. Since I couldn't do anything about it, I just laid there and enjoyed it.

Gotta try for a WILD still though...One day I will do it!

I don't use math as a means of retaining consciousness. I do know several people who have reported success using such methods, however. I prefer simply repeating the following phrase to myself:

Cogito, ergo sum.

It works...sometimes.
