That would be pretty scary, to still hear screams from a dream when you wake up.
I'm your dream, mind astray. I'm your eyes while your away.

I know what you mean. Occasionally, I'll wake up froma dream, and feel like someone, or something was watching me. Usually, I think, you get the feeling as sort of a...lingering effect from the dream. Probably the reason you're waking up at 2 or 3 in the morning is because something from the dream is still spooking you, even though you've dismissed it previously as a dream, nothing more. I once had a dream that I was on my computer, and this pop up came up and said "so-and-so is watching you" and an eye came up on screen and started looking around. Thinking it was another stupid pop-up (well, they're all pretty stupid now-a-days) I logged of and turned around...and there was a person looking in through the window, at me, dressed in all black. Needless to say, I couldn't sleep the rest of the night, and I had a very hard time getting back on ym computer while I was home alone from that point on. I've since moved into a new house and no longer have that problem. Now, just recalling it, it's starting to freak me out a little . Hope this helps you out a bit. Happy dreaming.

yeah, 'Old Hag syndrome' or something similar. Related to sleep paralysis. I've had it myself once and scared the shirt outta me until I realised what was happening. This is more common than you may think and if you searched around you'll probably find some similar cases of it.

This is how I explain the phenomenon.

Once in awhile I'll have a nightmare about spiders, and even after I wake up, I'll see them crawling around on the bedroom floor. I mean, its usually very dark, and you're still a little disoreinated from the dream. I think your mind will continue to project the dream images, even after you're technically awake. It doesn't last for very long - maybe several seconds max.

This would be an excellent time to do a reality check - the images will disappear once you regain more logical thought processes.

Sleep paralysis is a pretty wicked thing, where you wake up and can see your room and etc and are still in a dream so to speak. I get it every time I eat cheez its before I go to bed (I'm not kidding.)

      It can suck.

I used to have that, these dark hooded creatures would walk into the room and I would be unable to move. If they saw that I was awake, they would sound an alarm and start killing me (gruesome, no? ), but if they didn't see I was awake they would simply walk away.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned a False Awakening! False Awakenings can be extremely realistic and it would explain the screaming.

I'm for the residual senses explanation, though a false awakening would fit, also.

I've had a few dreams in the past where my senses kick in at different times after waking up. I had a false awakening once where this guy was trying to break into my window and had a group of people with him. Then I woke up for real and I could still hear them outside my window for about 10-15 seconds. Finally it faded away. It's happened to me quite a few times, actually.
Scary as shit but, ultimately, nothing to worry about.

I once woke up from an FA where a beast/ monster type thing was crawling up my bed, I woke up and did a RC as usual and decided to stay in bed for a few minutes, I then felt and heard the edge of the bed indent by my feet like something was slowing putting its foot on it, then it happened again but it was closer, (I was frozen in unhappiness/ horror) then another step but closer this time, I decided I would kick at its next step (by now i was thinking maybe it was my brother or a family member trying to get something off my bed, i was gonna freak them out by kicking them) so in about 3 seconds I felt it again but it was closer, and i kicked at it as hard and as fast as I could, only to hit nothing, freaked out a bit now I said out loud "<brothers name>"... no reply, so i did another RC, and laid there for about 15 more seconds thinking about it when I felt movement again, this time it was at about my chest, so I hit/ grabbed at it and at the same time grabbed my TV remote and clicked it on only to find nothing, nothing in my room at all

so yes, hallucinations can reach further than just hearing and seeing. I personally never thought about that

(PS. in other words it was as real as you want it to be considering it was all in your head)

when i was a kid i was scared stiff by a lightning strike two houses down, when it struck i immediately woke up and covered my ears. with the instantly loud thunder/explosion i heard a very loud deep laughter. i couldnt move for 30 minutes or so because it scared me so much. so this mustve been what happened. i was awoken so suddenly, that i was actually still not all there and my mind was playing tricks on me

the rabbit hole is pretty deep mang
