How not to have lucid dreams

Hi all! I have been having lucid dreams since I was about 10 after counseling for night terrors. My mother and sister can also lucid dream. Here is the problem right now: normally I still can get a decent nights sleep and still feel rested. Lately I have been under a lot of stress (just moved half way across the country, waiting to hear about getting into med school) and my lucid dreams are exhausting me. Sometimes I dream I am at work and sometimes it is random. I tell the other people in the dream I am tired and need to rest and they tell me I can sleep when I am dead and drag me along on crazy adventures. I have been having some bad dreams to and the energy it takes to keep them controlled and from becoming nightmares is wiping me out and I have had a few I lost control of and wake up yelling. Has this happened to anyone else and any suggestions. I have tried going to a beach or cruise ship to relax and crazy adventures start. I may not find out about my first choice med school until July (alternate list) so I really need some help!
      Thank you!

Don't try thinking about anything, just go with the flow. Infact going on an adventure shouldn't be a problem, don't try and make the dream relaxing. Don't try and control anything at all. If you do that it should hopefully turn into a normal dream.

As for nightmares don't try and control them either, just say to yourself "this is just a dream nothing can harm me", and go on with your dream.

My sister has had problems similar to this. She is terribly afraid of her dreams but she is always aware they are dreams. What she does is recite to herself a prayer... Doesn't mean you have to but find something soothing to recite to yourself inside your dream. She was actually meditating in her dream state. Anyway she was able to stop her nightmares and or just reach a normal dream state. She tries her hardest to not remember her dreams because they frighten her so much. Well that's my idea. Hope it was helpful!

Alric's Idea was a good one too! Definatly try that!!!

      Good luck to you!!!

      Welcome to the forums spec.

Wow I think its the first time we had a newbie post right off a topic on how not to have lucid dreams.

The only practical suggestion I can give you is to forget totally forget about control. If you can chance a few bad dreams that is. I agree with Alric, nothing in nightmares can hurt you, just remember that.

Another possiblity is to get the BWGEN program and use one of the presets that allows you to sleep without dreaming and see if that works.

I know we have to be careful of what we wish for but damn..... wish I had this problem.

I hate to say this, but if you want a good night's sleep, couldn't taking nyquil help or have a few shots of vodka (if you are of drinking age).
Anything that you can do to knock yourself out I think would help.

Anyway, wish I had this problem....

I wish I had a problem that could be fixed by drinking vodka too.....
      If I hadn't made me
I'd be more inclined to bow
Powers that be would have swallowed me up
But that's more than I can allow...

You could do this for a few days by setting your alarm to wake you up before you enter REM sleep. Try setting the alarm to wake you up 1 hour later every time you wish to hit the pillow through the night. This will drastically affect the quality of your sleep and you'll feel almost as if you've not slept for days. Eventually, your body will catch on and force you to enter REM as soon as you fall asleep, exposing you to the possibility of lucid dreams again.

Thank you for the help :)

Thank you for all of the suggestions!
I have been trying to really relax and just let the dreams flow instead of being actively involved- the sensation I have been feeling can best be described as what you feel when they give you pre-anesthesia drugs before surgery, you are aware of what is going on but are being moved around by another force (like when being pushed on a guerney or in a wheelchair). I have found though that if it is starting to get scary if I make the sky or the walls pink or purple everything just kinda moves along and doesn't continue in a scary or threatening way. Last night I actually got to lie on the lawn of the front yard of the house I grew up in and watched the clouds go by in a light lavender sky, it didn't last very long but I woke up refreshed.
I did try having a glass of wine one night, but because I generally only drink about once every few months the dreamless sleep was negated by the icky headache I had the next morning. OTC sleep aids only seem to get me to fall asleep faster but don't affect dream quality for me.
A warm bath and herbal tea have been added to my bedtime routine for relaxation as well and I have cut out all caffinated beverages and chocolate .
Thanks again for all of the suggestions! 8)
