This afternoon at 1:41 I started a nap. I woke up at ten after 2. The total time I was down was an hour and a half. At some point I fell asleep and became completely lucid. By completely I mean I was absolutely aware I was dreaming and was making most all decisions about what I did.

However The dreams were only someway clear. They were about midway between my most clear and least clear dreams. And I had about the same level of control.

This dream held a few first for me. All of my lucid dreams end with me thinking "oh well I am to awake now to continue dreaming" and I lose lucidity. Today I tried to test if this was a false awakening. Luckily it was. Each time (4 times) that I thought I was waking up I could sort of feel myself laying down. So I (in my mind) jumped up and headed for the kitchen. It worked three times. I jumped up and was right back in a dream.

Another first was that each time I went into my kitchen I attempted to walk through the wall to get outside. This worked twice. A couple times I couldn't do it and so I just opened the door.

I am really happy to have LD'ed and have made a couple firsts. But I thought that LD only happened in REM sleep. And I thought that REM sleep took hours to reach. Was I wrong about that or is there another explanation for having lucid dreams after as little as one hour?

Thanks for any information you might be able to help me with.

I've only had 1 experience of an LD at the beginning of the night rather than in the morning. I think I went to bed around 10:30-11pm one night, and woke up at 12:30am after having a full-on LD. I was a bit shocked but it was really neat to experience it so early in the night.

people having dream only during REM and not all night e.g. non REM is a myth http://www.dreams.ca/science.htm
Parasomnias are a class of disorders which include nightmares (which often occur during long REM periods), sleep walking and sleep talking, bed-wetting, body rocking during sleep onset and teeth grinding (which all occur during non-REM sleep, the latter often being identifiable by worn down teeth or a sore jaw). Night terrors are also in this class, and differ from nightmares in that they occur during non-REM sleep and are usually very intense so that the sleeper awakes in panic, often screaming, with heart pounding, and with less recall of dream content.[/b]

REM Dreams and Non-REM dreams are very different from each other in a few major ways. The first difference between the two is Non-REM dreams consist of brief, fragmentary impressions. They are also less likely to involve visual images compared to REM sleep, and are more frequently forgotten. Non-REM dreams are like thinking about something during the day for a brief period of time while REM dreams are comparable to thinking deeply about something. REM sleep consists of about two hours a night while Non-REM sleep lasts about four to six hours.[/b]
i can get tons more evidence to show you the hypothesis that we dont dream during non-REM sleep is a myth. this particularly anger because this forum should no a basic fact like that or even a basic understanding of brain e.g. i bet 90 percent of the people in here think the brain left side is for language and right is picture drawing e.t.c. we forget dream a normal person would think a person only dream about once a week why because this belife is more acceptable then the true observation that we dream all night.

p.s. it just one big myth the reason we dont remeber every dream is because of memory and the change in verbal thought that happen during non-REM.

well yes you are correct most dream in non REM are particully nasty and not as bizarre the sad thing is it proberly more stable meaning longer dream and better lucidity. because of emotional nature of it can pretty sad and my nightmare only occur in this region sleep. but then again non REM dreams can be more rewarding then REM dreams.

      Why? jk!

I find that if I take a nap when I get home from school (3:30-4:30pm) and then go to sleep at like 8-9pm I get into REM faster and have a better chance to have a LD. I suppose it's because I'm continuing on my sleep patterns?

I have yet to LD in a nap though.

When using the FILD technique, the LD comes at you very quickly...
