This is not uncommon.
After all some techniques, WILD or HIT go directly from a waking state into a dream state.
Many feel that it takes this long to get into REM. I think this is where people tend to be misled.

As you have fallen asleep there a many instances where your conscious mind is still active. (Not fully disengaged to the subconscious.) As a result your awareness sparks your lucidity.
