I dont know what this is.

At night when I lay with my eyes closed, and am feeling tired, I try to block out as many thoughts as possible and just focus on the "Blackness".
After a small amount of time I start to see patches of colour, then they change.
They change into images, totally random and uncontrollable.
But they are crystal clear. It only lasts for about thirty seconds or so, because then I start to "think" about the images and they dissapear.

Just wondering if anyone knows what it or they are?

It's not lucid dreaming, I can do that and know what it is.

These images that you are seeing are called Hypnagogic images. I like to think of them as little movie trailers to dreams.

Ya this is common for myself. This is mainly at he beginning of falling asleep. And while your feeling your brain up with "blackness".. i personally like to call it "The Darkness" go a head and throw whatever you possibly would "want" to think about. And just let the details expand by itself. Make sure you only start with a small simple something. its crazy!!!

I used to try and pay attention to those, back a long time ago, before I learned anything about dreams and lucid dreaming. I called it the "RAM Room". Temporary images that disappear upon realisation that they are happening. (RAM as in Random Access Memory - the computer memory that goes away if a program is exited or if the computer is turned off without saving)
