      New guy...with stories!

That was maybe a bit too enthusiastic...but oh well. Brief about me: I'm 24, just graduated with a BS in "Information Technology" from University of Central Florida, and started a computer business with my dad.

I'm still a bit new to the lingo, but as far as I can tell, I've had 3 lucid dreams so far, one being pretty "low level" the other two being very aware, but very brief (I'll get to that later).

I'm sure I dream, but I rarely remember them, so I have no way of confirming how often I dream :p I know in some places below I make it seem like I had the same type of nightmare every night, but I didn't. Even 1 really bad nightmare a month is enough to make it seem like it is every night to your subconscious. At least to me.

      Relevant background:
I was raised a Christian, though as I have gotten older my beliefs have gone shuffled around a lot as I try and figure what it is I do actually believe in. I have experienced/witnessed some pretty weird stuff that has me pretty convinced that there is indeed some type of higher power, and some stuff we just don't understand going on. I have also never really liked the house my parents live in now, I have never felt comfortable in it, and only after living in it for 2 years did I begin to feel even slightly comfortable in my room. Everything just felt *weird*. This caused me to not sleep well. I could write a ton more on this, but it's not the point, so I won't right now. Maybe later

My parents had just moved, forcing me to transfer colleges from out of state (where I was very active in a Fraternity & had lots of friends & a social life) to a small tourist town where I knew absolutely no one. I made a few friends in a community college, and got to be really good friends with this girl. She was having some personal issues, and being the good friend I was, I tried to help her out.

The first dream & "dream precursor" are pretty long, but are at least relevant to the other 2. So, read on if you can. I'll try to keep it entertaining.

      The dream Precursor:
Typical night consisting of staying up on the computer because my brain wouldn't "shut down", then finally going to bed, tossing and turning. Well, I find myself in this ...cave is probably the best way to describe it. It's very dark, and very wet. I can see a faint light, so I head towards it, and get to the point where I can see a girl sitting in the corner, knees to her chest, crying. Curiosity gets the better of me, so I walk closer. As I do so, I realize this is my friend from school, and suddenly a presence which I am going to define & call a demon (because of my fuzzy recollection, but that's what it was to me) jumps in between she & I. It was big, it was smelly, it was dark, and just had this aura of evil emanating off of it.

I kept trying to get to my friend, it kept me from doing so. It kept saying "She's mine!" and such like that. It then starts to attack me, and I wake up.

This scenario, me dreaming about whatever, and this demon attacking me out of nowhere, continues to happen for months. I can't move, I can't breathe, I can't do anything. I find myself waking up thrashing around inhaling incredibly deep as I had been holding my breath for who knows how long (in high school/early college days I could hold my breath almost 2 minutes voluntarily, so who knows how long I was doing it subconsciously here).

Until one night... (the first lucid dream!)
It was after finals, I was slipping really far into depression, and just one of those days where you are simply tired of dealing with everything. I fell asleep, and sure enough, I am back in the cave, and the demon begins to attack me. Well, I am at first panicked and scared like normal. I can't move, I can't breathe, I'm getting thrashed. Then something hits me, I don't know why, but I hear my friend calling to me, and I realize it's a dream. Something about hearing her scream in the dream caused me to, even though it was just barely, realize I was dreaming. And since I used to be a big halo junkie, I did the first thing any halo junkie would do when he is getting railed on like a little school girl, I pulled out my shotgun and blasted the hell out of the demon. I don't know why I decided to pull out a shotgun, it just seemed to make sense, so I did it. I went over to my friend and helped her up, and then just woke up.

After that night, I noticed a remarkable change in her attitudes and she began to be less depressed. It was really weird. (I never told her about the dreams). I can't explain it, and don't really intend to try. Some people will call BS, and I would do the same had it not happened to me.

      Next two dreams:
Shortly after, I moved down to Orlando, Fl to finish up college. At first I had a one bedroom apartment that I lived in by myself for 2 years. Towards the end of the first year, I was starting to go thru some severe depression again, and the nightmares began with the previously mentioned demon. Except now he was missing a big chunk of his midsection. That didn't keep him from attempting to eat my face repeatedly, however.

      Second Dream:
On one night in particular, I was battling for my life when the demon just stopped and disappeared. The cave lit up, and I was actually in my apartment room (much to my surprise). There was one (tiny) problem. I was being compelled to my door. Now, ever since I started going to my first college, I have kept my door shut and locked while sleeping. Most of that was because of pranksters on the hall. Part of it is because I am just weirdly paranoid. But, for whatever reason, I continued to keep my bedroom door shut & locked while I was in that 1 bedroom apartment, despite the fact I lived there alone.

As I mentioned, I was going towards the door. SOMETHING was telling me to open it, and I couldn't stop myself from doing it. I didn't want to open the door. I knew whatever was on the other side was pure evil, and I wanted nothing to do with it. The whole "evil spirits can't come in unless you invite them in" theory started racing thru my head. But I couldn't stop myself. I heard this roaring laughter all around me. I can't even really describe it, all I know is that it freaked me out. My hand reached out despite my efforts to not grab the door, and I touched the knob. As soon as I did, I felt the cold metal & it hit me, "I'm dreaming. I don't have to open this door."

But I couldn't stop. I knew I was dreaming, but for some reason I couldn't do anything. I couldn't control any of my actions, and as my hand began to turn the lock, I realized the quickest way out was to make myself wake up. So I yelled at myself to wake up. At first to no avail. I felt like I was watching my own death in slow motion. I kept yelling and yelling, and I finally did just before I opened the lock.

I sat up in bed, panting, sweating, swearing, flailing. I immediately called one of my friends (who did know of the first dream) and told her what happened. She managed to calm me down after an hour or so, but I still remember very vividly the dream.

      Third dream:
Fast forward about a year and a half. I moved out of my 1 bedroom apt and got a 2 bed/2bath with a guy I had met in one of my classes that I had become friends with. I hadn't had any more encounters with anything, no more nightmares, but no other dreams that I could recall either

Well, one night I was laying in bed trying to go to sleep. For once I wasn't depressed. School was almost finished, I was enjoying life, had a good full-time job as a system admin, etc etc. Well, as I lay in bed not being able to sleep, I suddenly felt this ominous presence looming over me. This is very weird to me, because I'm awake. I was somewhat "used" to this kind of thing happening in a dream. But not while I am wide awake. I go to reach for the TV remote, and realize I am scared stiff. I can't move. I'm too afraid to reach out from under the covers over a 2 inch gap to my desk and grab a remote. A remote that I can see the glowing buttons on! (I keep my room pitch black because I have trouble sleeping with lights on) As I lay there wide awake too petrified to move because of this familiar evil presence, I begin to feel something...awkward. And unusual. I notice that I am becoming lighter. Wait, no I'm not, I'm lifting off the bed, covers and all. I immediately realize that this is not cool. Lifting off your bed while wide awake, being too scared to move because a demon you previously blasted with a shotgun in a lucid dream is hovering around you, mocking you, is not an ideal way to spend the evening, trust me.

I began screaming at the top of my lungs, to no avail. Nothing comes out. Not that it would necessarily matter anyway, my door was locked...

So as I am panicking, I look down and realize there is nothing on my bed. My covers are hanging over my body still, draping down towards the bed, but that is it. I am pretty well freaked out at this point, and noticed that I am getting really close to the ceiling, so I start frantically looking for something to grab on to. I grab the lamp that is beside my bed and hold on for dear life, when I notice that the door on the wall opposite me...isn't there. And instead, it is on the wall beside me to the left. Which it shouldn't be, as the bathroom door is usually there (and still was). So, not thinking anything else, I realize this is a dream, and I wake up, in bed, thrashing, flailing, swearing, sweating....(there seems to be a pattern with that).

I calm down, roll over, get "comfortable", and ...lay there. And lay there. Wide awake. When I start floating up again, this time much more swiftly, hearing that horrifying laughter and feeling that crushing ominous presence. I know this isn't real. There's no way it's real. It just happened and it wasn't real. I tried moving, couldn't. I tried yelling, and could this time. But it didn't do any good. Apparently no one could hear me. I tried to force myself awake, but for some reason I wasn't convinced that I was dreaming. I looked at the walls hoping the doors were messed up again. Nope. Doors were fine. I tried grabbing the light but it just came up with me this time. I felt myself floating up thru the ceiling so I concentrated everything on trying to keep from going all the way, when I suddenly saw a wallpaper "banner" around my room on the top of the wall. (You know, those like 6" wallpaper things that some people put at the top of the wall that go around a room). Main problem with this: my room had no decorations. Just plain jane white. I used this as "proof" that I was dreaming, forced myself to become aware of being in the dream, and woke myself up before I went thru the ceiling into who knows where. (Later I found out that some hot chicks lived above me, too bad I couldn't have forced myself awake after floating thru their room...)

So, I wake up, cursing, panting, flailing...and pissed. Partially mad that it happened in the first place, especially after so long with no encounters, partially because after the first lucid dream, I told myself if it ever happens again to not panic, to figure out what's going on, and manipulate the hell out of it once I figure out that I'm dreaming.

Anyway. Those have thus far been my "experiences" in lucid dreaming, though at the time I had no idea what lucid dreaming was. It was only sense then talking to a few friends that I found out what it was (Yay google!). I've been kinda wary at first, but it's been awhile since I've had any "incidents" (even despite moving back in to this creepy house for now 2 months while we get this business off the ground so I can get my own place), and I've decided I want to learn more about it, hopefully so I can experience it in a good & pleasant way, but also so that I can be better prepared if I have another of those nightmares. Hope you enjoyed the read, sorry it was a bit long.

      Welcome!

Welcome to the forum new guy! Those are definitely interesting dreams. I wouldn't read too much into it though. I would suggest that you may need to get help with the root of the problem, the depression you were experiencing, cuz that's probably what's causing the bad dreams.

Yeah, depression sucks. I know (and have already taken care of) the cause that sent me into my last depressive state. That was a fun fiasco. If you're a betting man, placing $10 on "evil, two timing bitch" would be a good bet. It was something that had happened probably close to a year before the actual dream, but I hadn't realized it was bothering me subconciously as it was. Gotta love that -_-

But it is interesting, for me anyway, to look back and notice how each time I've had one of these dreams, and the other nightmares associated with it, that I have been really depressed. Not just "oh I had a bad day" depressed, but more along the lines of "life was hitting rock bottom". I hadn't ever noticed that before. But now that I do, the part that really sucks about that, is the depression isn't caused by the same thing each time.

Almost seems like they are general responses to me being depressed at all. Hopefully I can't only have lucid dreams while depressed. That would suck.

No way, you will be able to have lucid dream without being depressed for sure. They were just more likely to come when you were depressed, but that you can change.
