DID I have a lucid dream?

Last night I decided I was going to try to lucid dream. I set my alarm to 4:45am (5 hours after I would sleep) and I was going to wake up, think about my dream, do a reality check, tell myself I WILL have a lucid dream, and then sleep again. However, something interrupted me. I had the first nightmare I'd had since I was about 7 I'm currently reading a book called Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill. To give you the base of it, there's a man called Jude who bought a suit online which an old man had died in. Apparently it would be haunted. When the suit arrived, it was in a heart shaped box, and since he opened it, the ghost visited him a lot. The ghost would look like a regular old man, however he had black moving squiggles in front of his eyes. I was walking through my hallway towards the bathroom to brush my teeth. My sister was also brushing her teeth. As I walked in, I suddenly saw someone else sitting on the toilet seat. I guessed it was the old man from the book, however instead of having black squiggles on his eyes, he had half of his face ripped off as if it had been bitten off. I screamed loudly. Then I woke up. I was looking all around me, making sure it wasn't in my room. I kept hearing a weird tapping noise, that for some reason I thought it could have been the old man. I'd begin to fall asleep, then look up and see some clothes or my guitar and be freaked out as I thought it was the man. Eventually I fell asleep and had some more weird dreams about Bebo and my friends house, but they were only little But now, i'm starting to think. Maybe that was a lucid dream? I'd never done a reality check, and i'd never heard that tap noise either. Could this have been a lucid dream? Thanks, CazmoV

Ask yourself this question: Did you at any point think/feel/know that you were dreaming? Yes = It was an LD. No = It wasn't. To be honest I think it was an ordinary dream... Sorry mate.

No, it was not a lucid dream. It is only a lucid dream if you know that you are dreaming. You have the right idea about using the old man as a dream sign and doing a reality check though.
