      My first LD

I've been trying to have a lucid dream for a couple weeks now. I've been doing reality checks in my waking life every day, and practicing my dream recall. I have had lucid dreams in the past, but they were nightmares. I would realise that I was dreaming because something horrible would be happening, and as soon as I attained lucidity, I would wake up immediately. Last night I had my first lucid dream that was not brought on by a nightmare. I was chasing someone and I realised I was dreaming, so I decided that I would jump from rooftop to rooftop, almost flying. Sadly, I lost the dream before I could make anything else happen. The strange thing is that as soon as I realised I was dreaming, I felt like I might wake up at any second. It felt very fragile. I didn't though, and I was able to remain lucid for thirty seconds or so, then the dream progressed into something else and I lost lucidity. When I woke up in the morning, I realised that the feeling of fragility I had was only part of the dream; that I was not even close to waking up.

I was very excited. I noticed something strange, though, and that is sometimes in a dream I'll wonder if I'm dreaming, perform a reality check (like the finger through the palm or reading fine print), and everything is normal like I'm not dreaming. Any advice?

Welcome, and congrats on your first LD! Sounds like a pretty cool one for the first time.

Don't worry, reality checks don't work for me, either. I'm not saying you shouldn't keep trying, but I think that everybody just has to find what works best for them, and that will probably take some time and practice. If I find myself wondering if I'm dreaming, then I always am -- it's just a feeling I get. At that point, I always try to fly, or at least float -- that always seems to work for me. So I guess you could call it a reality check, except that I'm really already lucid at that point.

      Congrats!

How about trying to pinch your nose and trying to breathe through it. That has to work 100% of the time.

      I'll try it out.

Does anyone know of someone that is able to have lucid dreams every night?

Wow, progress! Last night I had incredibly vivid dreams. I can recall FOUR times that I did a reality check, the reality check confirmed I was dreaming, but I somehow would not believe it. I thought, "This is too real, I know I'm not dreaming. It doesn't feel like a dream."

Once was when I put my finger through my palm. It sort of went through...it didn't come out the other side, though, so I figured I wasn't dreaming.

Once was when I plugged my nose and could still breathe. I sort of accepted that I was dreaming when this one worked, but I lost it almost immediately.

Once was when I looked at my friend Neil and realised he was naked. I thought, "That's strange...am I dreaming?" but I looked again and realised he was wearing flesh-colored clothes, so I disregarded it.

Once was when I happened to look at a clock (an analogue clock) and the 10 and 11 had switched places. This was the most obvious tip-off for me. I thought, "I must be dreaming!" but sadly I can't recall what happened after that. I'm positive I lost lucidity, though.

Like I said, this is only my second night since I started practicing that I"ve had success! Pretty exciting!

      Any advice?

First that's great progress in such a short time! I can only say keep it up and practice your waking reality checks with the idea that you ARE dreaming not to prove that you aren't. In other words assume that you are dreaming. Try this.. I like the "press nose/see if you can breath" r/c but since you aren't recognizing it in your dreams.. try jumping in the air after doing your reality check. If you are dreaming, you will either stay in the air or come down very slowly (hopefully this will trigger you to become lucid). btw when I did this jump/hop r/c during my waking hours, I always made sure that no one else was around.. saves trying to explain! :-)
