      Lucidity of the weakest order

This morning, I was having a very bizarre dream about being at the beach in an underground cave that was a house where Michael Jackson lives and was having friends over for something that resembled Christmas, except it was a festival of bitching at Michael for being a child molester while honoring him for being a great entertainer. It was in a neighborhood. Any way, my father and I left Michael Jackson's cave/house and went to pick up my nephew who was staying a few houses down the road. My father and I got into an argument, and I flew off the handle (which doesn't happen in real life). I immediately apologized by saying something like, "I'm sorry. I'm really tired right now. In fact, I am asleep and dreaming." For some reason, knowing that I was dreaming did not register any more than enough to have me make the comment. Ordinarily, such knowledge would have me exploring the dream with awareness that I am dreaming. This time, I knew it for a split second and kept going without the awareness that I was dreaming. Has anybody else done this, and do you know any tricks for making sure you don't remain in such a weak state of lucidity? I plan to work on training my mind to catch such knowledge every time and act on it accordingly.
How do you know you are not dreaming right now?

I'm often the same way in dreams. I'll be doing something completely impossible, or maybe reading about lucid dreamiing, and the fact that I am dreaming never really registers. It's like I'm not quite mentally whole.

I've found two things about this: first, I've gotten better with time. I now seem to realize unusual situations and the like more often in dreams, though still not often. Second, you can improve your awareness in dreams by focusing on that intention before going to bed. If you have it in mind when you go to sleep, you have a much better chance of lucid dreaming. Also, make it a habit to critically observe any inconsistencies or abnormalities in the world when your are awake. Info that doesnt match up, or something happenning that usually doesnt. You dont necesarrily need to make sense of it, just do a reality check. In fact, its best to always do a reality check, because we often come up with ridiculous reasons while dreaming, like "just because."
Well life is short, so love the one ya' got, 'cause you might get run over or you might get shot.

Thanks, Scruffy. One of my two main methods is willing myself to fly many times during the day so I will try it while dreaming and pull it off in the dream world and then know for certain that I am dreaming. My other big one is checking reality throughout the day with intense concentration to see if it all adds up. This site taught me that trick, and it is the method that got me to start lucid dreaming in full effect. I think it's an excellent trick to use. I need to get it further into my head that ANY TIME I say to myself I am dreaming, it is time to experience a lucid dream. I usually have that straight, but I apparently slacked off yesterday morning. I'll improve it.

Hey Universal, I have one WORSE than yours: I was in this locker room when I actually realized I was dreaming and was about to say it out loud and try flying, but like an IDIOT I thought I would make a fool of myself by shouting it out so I thought instead' "oh, I'll wait till no one else is around and then fly"

The dream went on and I forgot I was dreaming!

Next time, just yell at everybody, "Screw you! You're not even real!" and then push somebody into a locker and go flying.

The only time i ever came close to becoming Lucid was just before i joined this website (its really what made me dig deeper into lucid dreaming and of course that led to this great site)

I was in my kitchen just standing there (well sitting on the floor actully!) and someone just walked in and said "Your Dreaming" and i hit me straight away and everything in the kitchen became so much clearer and vivid. But before i could even think what to do while lucid the dream ended.

Thats an interesting point. Has anyone else ever had a simalar experience were someone (a Dream Character) tells you that you are dreaming.
Lets all do something mental like steal a traffic cone.
