      Friends shy of philosophy

I was wondering if ya'll have a similar experience to mine that when you try to talk to friends about philosophy and extreme "truths," they tend to shy away or seem disinterested. The one way I put it in the argument is to disguise it in topics they like. I have just one friend who really likes to discuss it a lot, and I love her a lot for it!

Yeah, I know what you mean, Rick. it seems like almost all of people I know are just so...shallow. Dear god, no wonder Reality TV and Springer have had such a grip on the masses.

I am very grateful for Gosu-chan, with whom I discuss extreme truths and the philosophies of life and the universe with at great length.

I am fortunate enough to have a small inner circle of friends whom I can have these types of discussions with. Some people just have no desire to ponder those things.

Hey, I'm touched, Barbizzle! (btw, my name is actually Eric, everyone)

It's always awesome to talk to a dream character about philosophy.

I have this friend, a neighbor of mine, who I can enter some philosphical topics in with, but he ends up giving conclusions and not really knowing what he's talking about. Kinda makes me lose hope!

I almost feel driven to give up thinking about philosophy and just give in to the culture around us.

You got some point, Lucius. I probably take it too seriously, but I can't help it. People told me that philosophy is dangerous ground, but I just angrily thought they weren't intellectual capable or determined to handling it.

You only take it too seriously when it becomes a burden for you Philosofy really is a hobby to me (an awesome one at that) and not a way of living. True spirituality (which philosofy often results in, at least for me) has very little to do with deep thinking, I believe.

Also alot of us have the tendency to get ourselves into very simple things, that become complicated matters because of our philosofical nature. Its just the same with spirituality..it can be simple, or deeper and complicated. Neither better than the other We just have to be careful to not think too much and give ourselves an unnecessary headache! I used to do that.. I think wisdom is not something that can be forced upon yourself anyway, it flows naturally and digging like mad will just get you tired most of the time. But maybe Im wrong, maybe its like treasure hunting who knows ^_^
But yet again, dont give yourself a headache and don't get too stuck on something like knowing absolute truth. At least, thats whats best for me. I cant really speak for others of course..so many paths to the same end and so many different personalities!

Alot of this has to do with the fact that many people hold dogmatic personal beliefs that they have no justification for and they feel uncomfortable discussing them or alternitives when they have no way to defend them. I do realize that not everyone is going to be a philosopher simply because it is a hobby, but people should at least have well formed views on most of the philisophic questions, the problem is that our society is largely anti-intellectual and views philosophy as something for those "stupid smart people".

I find that most people just flat out don't care.

Luckily I have 3 or 4 friends that I can talk about this stuff with, but the rest of my friends usually say things like "whatever", or "huh?" when I bring up anything philosophical.

They're content not even considering such issues. It's not that they're stupid or ignorant, they just have different priorities than people like us. I don't judge them either way.

I cant have those kind of deep talkings with my friends.

such things are not important to them as they live by the common youth lifestye:Live life to its fullest and do what you like when you want to.Dont pay any atention to the complicated things they just make life less fun.

I like complicated stuff like philosphy because they give my life extra meaning.

It sometimes is like a verse in the bible. I could look it up but I'm too tired .It says,” A profit is least respected in his own town" That is to say around people that know you. You get better results talking to a complete stranger. Unless of course they have a problem with using there imagination or something. Like mister Bean says, "That’s what I think"
