Job 38:4 Where wast thou when I founded earth? Declare, if thou hast known understanding.

Why did God ask this of Job?

If you put it in context, you'll see that Job questioned God (if I remember correctly)
God is putting him in his place with a rhetorical question. By asking him where he was at this time, he leads Job to realise his lack of knowledge and understanding.

Essentially to make Job put things back into perspective.

God was trying to get Job to see that he was in Him before the world was made, and that he could declare! If he would remember from where he came, and that he was one of the ‘sons’ of God which shouted for joy.

P.S. If we all 'are' sons of God, then are we not all eternal as He (God) is eternal?
