I tried my best to make sure every event only have two subjects specified in the sentence. It is easy to infer third or more subjects.. I find it intriguing that we may be more inclined to infer those other individuals than see the relative issues at hand.

Think of the subjects in the event who 'suffer' the event. (I could not think of a better relative term than suffer.. I did not want to say experience, witness, etc. I think you will understand..)

I thought you were getting at that no two events next to each other seem different in "badness," yet there is a great disparity between the first and last one.

Not sure where you're going with this.

If we don't suffer from one thing we suffer from another. Hopefully we don't suffer from too many things. Unfortunately some do.
