      ability to forget

Heres something to chew on. If you had an ability to forget something, would You use it? say for example that you read a really good book or magazine or watched a really good movie, would you allow yourself to forget the movie/book in order to be able to watch it for the first time again? keep in mind that you willl remember that you chose to forget.

Hmmm... that's a pretty cool idea! Hehe kinda like episode 18 of heroes... I won't spoil it if you haven't seen it because Heroes is of course the crowning achievement of mankind and nothing will ever be better than it, no matter how hard we try.

      *ahem*

Anyway, I think I would use it for like books and movies, and first kisses. I'd make myself forget what my first kiss and every kiss with my gf was like, so we could have a first kiss. First kisses are always the best

Also maybe scary traumatising ordeals, it might help to forget those times.

^^ no i dont think you should forget scary and horrible ordeals, unless maybe its rape. Because sometimes those hardships strengthen you into the person you are.

Yes, I would definately use it. I would tell people to put me through tests, giving them specific instructions and then use the forget ability and go through the test and see what I'm capable of.

True, and I can see your point, but I wouldn't personally want to remember being raped, perhaps knowing that I'd been raped and how horrible it was would be enough, but having to live with the nitty gritty details, remembering them in perfect clarity? Maybe it's just me but I don't think so.

Maybe there's a line to be drawn, about how much detail you remember? If you could choose what to erase from your memory maybe it would work?

Of course this is the entire idea behind reincarnation - live a life and learn your lessons, then forget all about it so you can live another life and experience everything for the first time all over again. Hmm...

You might not enjoy something the second first time round. Beside forgetting something you think you might want to to forget might not be as good as you'd think.

"Third wish?" The man was baffled. "How can it be a third wish if I haven't had a first and second wish?"
"You've had two wishes already," the hag said, "but your second wish was for me to return everything to the way it was before you had made your first wish. That's why you remember nothing; because everything is the way it was before you made any wishes." She cackled at the poor berk. "So it is that you have one wish left."
"All right," said the man, "I don't believe this, but there's no harm in wishing. I wish to know who I am."
"Funny," said the old woman as she granted his wish and disappeared forever. "That was your first wish.""

I would not use it. For a long, long time I wanted to forget ALL of my memories, and start from scratch. Then after a while I took it down a notch and thought, ok, I'll just focus on trying to forget the bad ones. But now I realize, as others here have already alluded to, if you forget your mistakes, you're doomed to repeat them.

As for forgetting a good memory so you can experience it for the first time again, like NeAvO said, you might not enjoy it the second time. Then you've lost a really good memory. For instance, my favorite video game is Final Fantasy VII. I used to wish I could play if again without knowing how it ends and everything, but I was 12 when I played it. Now I'm 19, I'm not sure I would think it quite as wonderful as I did back then.

I guess if you'd just seen a great movie, then erased your memory, then watched it again straight away you'd still think it was great. But wtf would be the point? You can spend a whole day doing that, but in the end, you only have the memory of one great movie. Might as well go out and try to find another great one!
